Off topic, sniper rifle question.

Post by trent »

Since this place seems to contain a wealth of knowledge from many people, I was wondering what is the cheapest (price, not quality) military surplus "sniper" rifle available on the market. All I can think of is a Mosin Nagant 91/30 sniper, but I'm sure there are other ones out there that are a good value

Cheapest is gonna be a relative term here ... a rifle that was actually issued as a sniper rifle with the original optics is gonna be pricey from any era ... modern all the way back. There are some platforms that you could use to get a good, solid and accurate rifle on, but an original is gonna take some serious coin. For a great shooter, there are probably still some Swiss K-31's out there ... or a reasonable condition Yugo Mauser ... of the Mosin Nagants, the Finnish are hands down the best, but they are NOT the ones that you find for $79. The other MNs are really hit and miss for accuracy and are not as easy to rebarrel as the Mausers are.

Hope this helps...

The Mosins are out there (repros) for $339-$359 or pick up a $79 re-arsenaled version and hit the various board sponsors (Makarov.com I think has scopes and mounts) or even ebay. There is a rear sight mounted scope mount that will go on without drilling and tapping etc.

If you want a sniper rifle thats fun but not historically accurate that mey be your best bet...$79 for rifle / $49 for mount / $150 for scope???

carguy that is one way to go I did that with a nice laminated stock 91 30 it was a little more work then I wanted was never really happy but my son liked it so it is on a wall of his office where in teachs in Ohio now...If I had to do it again think I wouldf go with the 339. repro.. besides it looks like enemy at the gate... and I dont have to curse and swear at it... the difference is only 61 bucks.... we really only want them to fill in collection or some fun nothing serious.... the other options wouldnt( I think ) get you any better results....
