As you can tell from the "Mike of the Weird Failures" thread I have a sweet '67 P-64 that is not completely healthy right now. I plan on shooting and cleaning it some more to see if the problem clears itself (since the failure has apparently gotten better since I first shot the pistol I still have some hope) but I'd like to start lining up option two. I do have another P-64 as a template but I'm not sure I am competent enough to start disassembling all the "parts is parts" and expect to get them all together. Correctly.P-64 Gunsmith

I can't help with a competent gunsmith, but I do know that you can ship a firearm to a licensed gunsmith without having to go thru a dealer and it can be returned directly to you. That is Federal law, but there may be some local or State law I am not aware of. You should be able to ship a pistol by FedEx or UPS. Sometime, this gets to be sort of "sticky" when shipping a pistol. Some UPS offices have idiots at the counter and they will not accept it. It is best to go to the UPS website and find the rules they have for shipping a handgun. They DO allow an individual to ship if it is going back to the manufacturer or a gunsmith for repair. Sometime theu want to see a copy of the license of the gunsmith too.
Edit - Oh yea, they have to be shipped Next Day Air, and you can't ship by USPS
