What the Heck just happened?

Post by gunneyrabbit »

Here is a strange situation,
Shooting at the range today when my Star PD just stopped ejecting cartridges and the slide is stuck in battery. Forced the slide back, took the slide of and did a field strip, ejector and extractor look just fine, gun is clean and properly oiled and lubed. Put the pistol back together and the same problem, no ejection and no new cartridge in battery. Took the pistol apart again, ya it was stuck , did another field strip and everything looks fine. Put the pistol back together and everything works just the way it is supposed to. Shot up the rest of the ammo and came home.
Any one else experience any thing like this or heard of any thing
similar, more importantly should I be wary of what happened?

I've had something similar shooting wolf .45 out of a Taurus 1911. It was the only thing the range had on hand. Between the tight chamber, steel cases and lacquer, the spent cases were sticking in the chamber. First few times, I was able to clear it but it eventually got to the point were I just gave up and went home for the day.

I was shooting reloads that haven't given me any problems in the past, 200 gr. Bear Creek, moly coated, lead round nose flat point. Casings are all OK for length so that shouldn't be a problem. May be metal from case trimming got lodged some where, It's a mystery to me.

gunney,

That is a strange scenario, I just recently picked up a LNIB Star PD. My first experience with mine I had the problem of it not going into battery after first round fired, but my problem was due to me breaking one of my own rules, not breaking it down and thoroughly cleaning it before I took it to the range, it looked so good I "assumed" it good to go. My problem was solved when I brought it home and gave it a good cleaning. On returning to the range my PD preformed 100% with factory ball and my ball reloads, however, I did have a problem with my 200gr lead round nose flat point reloads, but all the ball type ammo fired great.

Have you checked your recoil buffer for wear? It could be starting to disintegrate and jamming things up.

PshooteR, the shock buffer is new, the one in the pistol when purchased was worn and needed replacing.

The recoil buffer in mine looked new but I took it out, if I were going to shoot it a lot I'd probably put it back in, but I don't plan on shooting it all that much.

gunney,

I'm pretty sure it was the "flat points" on the cast bullets even after I completely cleaned the PD, it performs great with all my different factory and reloaded ball ammo with out the flat points. I normally only shoot ball ammo in my 45acp's, I do have some Remington Golden Savber 230gr JHP and some brass 230gr flat points reload bullets that I will try on my next trip to the range to see if they will feed ok, but I'm not really worried about it since I prefer ball in my 45's, plus the cast bullets I shoot are at a low FPS to keep from leading the barrel up, so at those speeds a hollow point won't spread much if at all anyway. Both my Taurus's PT1911 and PT145 both handle the JHP very well.

Until I figure out what happened the pistol is going to be used at the range only, carry is out of the question at this point, it's too bad it is such an accurate pistol.
