Slight Pitting: Any Ideas?

Post by neoshooter »

My newly-acquired P-64 has very slight pitting on the left side of the slide. Otherwise, it is perfect and inside it looks like it had never been fired. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any ideas how to clean up the pitting? Super-fine sandpaper and re-bluing?

Thanks for the help.

My J&G Sales "very good plus" P-64 had some light surface rust also. Ten minutes with fine (#0000) steel wool and Rem Oil and it cleaned up beautifully. Rub gently, wipe frequently with a clean cloth, and use plenty of oil.

The steel wool and oil will work great for light surface rust but will not remove pitting.
You need to remove metal to remove the pits. Various sandpapers from 240 to 400 to 600 grit would likely do it before reblueing. Look for the original finish direction and sand in the same direction.
You could always bead blast and blue for a satin finish.
Brownells has quite a selection of spray on coatings that hold up well.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'll first try some super-fine steel wool and oil (CLP probably) and see what happens. I love the blued finish and hate to change to a coating, although some of them look mighty good and seem to be very durable.

I polished my Polish gun with fine steel wool and CLP oil and it looks much better! It must have been just surface rust in a few tiny spots. I know nothing is perfect, but these are such pretty little guns, I want it to look the best it can.

I've used fine steel wool and a variety of oils, including cutting oils to clean up rust, even some fairly rusty parts on many guns. Just takes patience. Daven
