Pierced primers S&B 7.62x54r (pics)

Post by garry »

After looking at a few empty cases that I had shot , I noticed that there were holes in the primers and it looked like a BB was in the holes. The primers were punched clean-thru and the anvils were bouncing around inside.
I pulled the bolt apart and the little brass primer punch-outs fell out of the inside of the bolt head. I backed the firing pin out ONE Full turn to shorten its protrusion length, and the first shot dimpled the primer and THE 2nd SHOT PIERCED THRU AGAIN !!!
I looked at the Brown Bear and SilverBear ammo, and the Bulgaria?/Hungary? surplus ammo(light blue box @ $2 a box ,green lacquered, headdstamp=DXM over 99 ,silvertip,.311 cal) that I had already shot first, and the primers looked fine/normal on all of those. I assumed that is from Harder and Thicker primers in the "surplus -type" ammo.
My assumption is that Sellior & Bellot has some VERY Thin and Soft primers on their yellow and green boxed ,Soft Point, 180gr., BOXER PRIMED,#2940, lot# 162-9 and t.c. 0 6238-1 and bar code# 7 80166 76207 2 , 7.62x54R cartridges. (made in Czech Republic)
There is NO visible damage to the Bolt head or the rest of the gun.(91/30-w/M-44 stock)
However -the Firing Pin "TIP" had some Brass seized to it ,but that was easily removed by dragging it across a piece of wood to 'buff' it clean.
I cleaned out and re-assembled the bolt , and shot two more S&B and both primers pierced thru. I switched back to the surplus stuff. I have never had any trouble with S&B ammo in any caliber before this, and sometimes I PREFER IT over other brands, so, I guess this is just a batch that got over-looked.
I guess we can add S&B 7.62x54R to the "Questionable Ammo" list for awhile. I am sure that if they were made aware of this, that they would instantly FIX the problem. CHECK YOUR S&B AMMO LOT#'s and if you shoot or have already shot any of it ,see if you have any pierced primers. Be careful and if you DO have any, take apart your Bolt and make sure to remove the cut-outs of brass from inside the bolt where the firing pin and spring are AND check the tip of the firing pin for brass "coloring" and buff it off. Wow, that's wild.

I have three Mosin's (M38,M44,M91/30) and I shoot the cheap corrosive ammo from various countries. It's the stuff wrapped in paper with string. I pick it up whenever I see it for cheap and have never had problems like that with it. I know it is not the best stuff, but it is what the Mosin's were designed to shoot.

I just clean up afterwards with hot soapy water.

I never shot any commercial ammo in my Mosin's.

Very unusual. I would send those pics to S&B, their ammo is supposed to be some of the best. Those rims look a bit thick too, maybe causing a headspace problem, especially since it still happened after you adjusted the firing pin protrusion. I shoot both commercial and surplus in my Mosins (M44,91/30)and haven't seen that problem.

The "bxn" headstamp is Czech and that ammo is from 1966 (99 upside-down), very good stuff.
