not trying to step on makers toes, but opinions please on my first attempt at auto grips.
These arent quite finished, but wanted input BEFORE i get too far along.
this was a solid peice with the color as it ran through the wood.
(you can see the grain match up on the back strap.)
This is the first grips i have attempted that were not flat panel type like on revolvers.
told my son last night that i would have to see if there was any more large trunks of poison in the fild edge
got home from work and he had a 8' section laying by the porch waiting for me.
here is a pic of the grain on larger vines, just cut accross
can I ask a silly question do you have to soak in bleach or something to get rid of the oils that cause the problem. Boy I spend a future to rid our other place of the vines .but it sure is a nice long grain never knew that.
Are you the first to use poison ivy, or have the vines been used by others? Sure looks like a pretty wood. How hard is it, and does it have a history of preserving well?
Every part of that plant can cause irritation, in the growth cycle or while dormant. It can cause irritation to lungs and throat when burned. BUT, not everyone is allergic to it.
nbender, it is mainly the sap that causes the re-action.
thoroughly dry wood shouldnt be much problem. and it is sealed with oil, wax or some other finish so there is no actual contact with the wood itself when completed.
is is what i would call a semi-hard it cuts/carves easily, but it is prety tough other wise.
i remembered some items an old fellow made out of it back when i was a kid, had some big vines here on the place and figured id give it a try and see how it holds up.
and of course it is a fantastic looking color and grain, rangeing from nearly bright white in the outer layers through greens, browns and red/orange shades
I*'m lovin' every min. of it! Nice work. I have some of that along w/big green vines that tend 2 curl in circles. Tried 2 talk myself in2 makin' a set outa piece of Ironwood but never seem 2 get around2it...................................................
i bet those will look great when you finish ! Nice grain to it ! can you post a pic of the insides? I want to see how you are doing any of the inside cuts/or are most of those fancy cuts even necessary? I need to make a pair for my wife's .25 auto pistol with flat grips, they have a small square patch that i will need to leave on the backside and recess it. I have made a pair for a similar cheap gun that i owned years ago and i didn't leave that area for the recess and the grips always wanted to rotate after a few shots and re-torquing the screw until it finally stripped out. Anyways i am curious to see how little will need to be removed OR left extra on the insides of the P-64. Thanks alot ! G
