Howdy Y'all,
Bought my 1972 P-64 new last week and took it to the range shooting American Eagle ammo both hollow points and ball ammo and was pleasantly surprised at the accuracy.
Took it home and stripped it down to include the grips. Being a southpaw, the thumb rest is a nuisance at best. Anyhow, it was dripping red oil (probably rust mixed with oil) I took gun scrubber to the entire gun and here is my question.
Does the gun have to be heavily oiled since it is not exactly tight fitting pieces???

No, the oil is a preservative. Soak that sucker in breakfree or some cleaner, then you can use carb cleaner (1.00 at wally world) to dry if off. Then lightly oil the gun and lightly grease the rails. It will shoot 100% better. Have fun & let us know how it goes.

My fourth P 64 took a ton of gun cleaner & then I used a lot of
breakfree lube liquid -- worked everything that moved, wiping
excess breakfree off with the mixed in cosmoline from the tight
& little spots -- now its one smooth working P 64.

The problem with the guns is they look like new inside, but they are not. When you think its clean, soak it and clean it again. And welcome to the best lil forum there is.

a friend introduced me to the G96 brand complete Gun Treatment spray can and i am hooked ! That stuff knocks the dirt out and cleans and oils ! It impressed me so much that i have some bottles of Hoppe's 9 just sitting and collecting dust ! i have seen no ill effects on plastics or wood. I will stick with this stuff from now on . very light odor, easy clean up, easy to apply, easy to see why i keep using it. not the cheapest stuff but worth it ! good luck! G

Rust mixed with red oil - maybe a combination of oil and cosmoline.
You wrote ".. American Eagle ammo both hollow points and ball ammo ...": I know American Eagle makes FMJ but I never heard of their FMJ ammunition. Was it some other brand of HP?

nbender,
the ammo was from American Eagle, the shop where I bought the gun is very old and the gunsmith who sold me the gun said the ammo was easily 6-7 years old and I bought the two remaining boxes. At another store I found Hungarian ammo for $10.00 a box for 50 rounds of FMJ

nbender,
as an add on, the two boxes of American Eagle were $15.00 each and now the AE FMJ at another store is $23.00 a box. That probably demonstrated how old the ammo is. BUT it shot great with no FTF.

CCPD,
I like to keep the old boxs when they are empty, looks good in a den.

Hey guys, anyone ever use a dry lubricant--Christian had some powdered graphite, suggested i use it so I put some in the slide rails--seems to be doing OK, but i'm not sure how long it will last...

himmel,
My opinion is that it does not work well in high speed applications. It's ok for door locks and other slow motion devices, but I believe it will jar loose and fall out rather quickly in an automatic pistol. Gun grease or other high temperature grease like wheel bearing grease will stay in place better.

Thanks, bzinggg--Right now, it looks like you rubbed a pecil into the slide recesses-- I expect I'll change it out
