Guys, I will throw my .02 cents worth on this subject. I hope I never have to use my firearm to harm another person, but if I do, I will try for the best placement of the bullet. As another member posted, the P-64 is a personall defense weapon designed for close range shooting. I just got back from Washington State and on the weekends, I was hikingin the Cascade Mtns. I was carrying my P-64 most of the time because I felt it was dependable and would stop an attacker or slow him down fast.

As to terminal stopping power, I prefer a .45 ACP, but the pistol is heavy. I don't worry to much about power, but I do worry about placement! Practice is the key to your survival ONLY IF NEEDED. First, I try to stay out of places where I will need a handgun, but if I do, I can depend on the P-64 even in 9mm Mak. I do carry using the Pow-R-Ball round. As to it's effectivness on a person, I don't know, but the ballistics gelatin test has enough info to make me carry that round. Other cartridges can do similar damage. The military round is the least effective in my opinion.

You will need to use a page translator but is great site. look for the galleria section.
if you type the adress into the Google search= it offers to translate it for you.(Translate this page)

a note about the different names for the 9x18 Makarov

9x18 Makarov/
9 mm Russian/
9mm Makarov Selbstlade Pistole/
9 mm Stechkin/9 mm Type 59/
9 18 xs Soviet

When Nikolai Federovich Makarov conceived his pistol in 1946, he did it starting off of a totally new cartridge.
This cartridge is the one that we know like 9x18 mm Makarov.
Some consider that 9x18 Extreme mm of before 2ª world war is a simple adaptation of the cartridge, but the differences are clear and important:::

*** 9x18 Extreme is 9x17mm (9mm Corto) extended, with a standard bullet of 9mm.***

However, 9x18 mm Makarov uses an almost cylindrical case with bullets of 9.2mm.
In fact its gestation follows the strictest criteria of Soviet rationality: the cases are those of 7.62x25 Tokarev but without abotellar (w/out shoulders?) and trimmed to 18mm. The machinery and tools can produce anyone of the two cases with hardly any changes.
The result is surprising, obtaining near the power of the 9x19mm Parabellum but with a pistol with a bolt closing by inertia of masses (Blow-Back).
It is considered to be an excellent cartridge for good balance between power, backward movement, and simplicity.

Holy crap! I wish I could read spanish or knew what a page translator was!

9x18 Mak ammo 95 grain is pretty much the norm I've seen and understand what we should fire from P-64s or Makarov PMs. I saw on a supplier website recently 100 grain and it was described as Russian ammo for you Russian pistol. Is this made for a particular "Russian" Mak or something or can this be shot with a P-64? I understand it is a hotter load but is it safe?

Perhaps I got lucky but I've had absolutely no problems with 100grain wolf ammo.
