Fla. Question.

I heard that if you have a Florida carry permit you can use that to pick up pistols and etc. at store with no hassle. .also if so does that work with a Fla. non-resident permit also.. I ask because in Va. it works that way... Not asking about the C and R know the rules there and have one..

I do not think that that is the case. I believe that you can purchase handguns only in the state you reside (full time residence, not "winters in Florida") and issued your resident permit not the Non-resident one(s). I say this because I was reading another forum where it is actually a federal regulation that handgun purchases made outside your state of residence must be through FFL dealers to transport that handgun back to your state of residence. Massachusetts (my state of residence) has such a restrictive policy and there is a list of approved handguns that can be retailed through FFLs, this would be a simple way to get guns not on the list if we all got NR permits where our family etc live and could purchase and transport back to MA. But I'm no lawyer.

Down here in FL. I can go into a store with my carry permit, buy a gun and leave with it in 10 minutes, no wait time. That goes for handguns and longguns purchased within the state. Handguns purchased outside the state you live in have to be transfered through an FFL that is in your state, longguns can be purchased outside of your state so long as you or the style of longgun your buying is not restricted in your state of residence. Your permit only effects out of state longgun purchases if the state your buying it in has reciprocity with the state that you live in, however if permit holders of the state your buying the longgun in are still subject to wait times than you also have to wait, even though you may not have to wait in your own state. I'm also not a lawyer.

I too am not a lawyer, however, according to several FL dealers and one ATFB agent I have spoken to, and this by no means makes what I am about to say 100% correct, but as of Nov '06 this is to the best of my understanding.

I have a carry permit in KY and FL, I mainly live in Ky. Because FL and Ky have reciprocity, I can have and FL Carry permit which I do have, however, because I do not have a FL drivers license, I CAN NOT purchase or sell a handgun in FL., but I can carry a handgun in FL. I can buy a long gun in FL, but the FFL dealer has to call the national hot line, if they ok the transaction, then I can leave with the long gun that day. FL residents with a carry permit still have to fill out the forms, but do not have to have a call in for approval, just provide the dealer with the carry permit and the dealer writes that information down on the application, and you save the $5-$8 fee that most charge, the same goes for gun shows in FL, FL residents still have to fill out the forms but no call in if you have a carry permit.

Note: Because I am a military veteran, when I took the class for my FL CCW, I didn't have to pay the fee to the state of FL, all veterans with a honorable discharge {DD214} that live in FL or a state that has reciprocity with FL don't have to pay that fee, you do have to pay for the course, but not the fee to the state.

I'll be in FL Friday, I will ask again about the above situations.

I live in central FL & have a carry permit for FL & when I buy at a gun store or show in FL, they always call in to check if I'm still in
an acceptable status, then I can leave with the purchased firearm.
Also I just picked up my fourth P 64, a 1968 with a round
hammer - this gun is totally unissued & unused with flat checked
grips -- purchased for $150.00 with free shipping from out of state. Its really beautiful !

I stand corrected and you are correct about the call in, everyone is called-in and reguardless if they have a permit or not. However, 8-9 years ago when I got my carry permit, that was the way it was, but 7-8 yeas ago I am told they changed it back to everyone has to be called in. Also, I was wrong about the fee for veterans, everyone has to pay the state fees, but with a DD214 in Florida you don't have to pay for the trainnig course. I got that backwards, sorry. I getting to old, I need to leave the techincal questsions to someone else. Again, I stand corrected and thank you for setting me straight, I'm glad someone is keeping me straight. ;D Back the original question by anjdrifter, yes, in the state of FL, if the call-in is approved you can take the handgun with you that day, otherwise, with out the permit you have to wait the three days. In Ky, and I know this is correct, if the call in is approved you leave with the gun that day, with or without a permit. I called back home today and checked on that. By the way, the weather is great here in Panama City, and am having a great time. ;D
