safety lever

Post by alltoys »

hello all
queston on the p64 safty lever. I have two of these handguns both have a broken safty lever.
question is it looks like if i get new levers what will stop them from breaking again? It looks to me that the way the safty is designed it just flips up and blocks the hammer from hitting the fireing pin. The hammer can slam into the safty mech if you cock it when the safty is on. Unless their is another way this safty lever should be stoping the hammer from being cocked or falling on the safety mech I am not understanding it completly?
Has anyone else had trouble with the safty mech breaking do to the hammer slaming into the mech that blocks the pin?
what else would cause these safty mech to break in two?
Any help in clearing this up would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
bill

Welcome to the forum Bill.

Can you post pics of the 2 broken levers?

Well, i could have but their was only one pistol that had both pieces and I found a local place that does silver soldering/ welding and had them silver solder/weld it back together. The other pistol only had half of the broken piece left inside the pistol. The outside lever part was missing. So I am concerned that this will break again if that hammer slams into the safty mech, even if I get a good replacement for the other pistol.

I was just wondering where it was breaking exactly in the middle or on the end?

Don't no if this will help or not. Here are a pic of the piece that was left in one of the pistols. It fits in all the way to the right side of the slide. The detent's ride on this end of the safety lever.
So we're it breaks gives an idea of why it broke?
The other one was broke just about in the same place

Can anyone else see them?

I can see them now. Maybe some bad heat treat and the metal failed over time.

Does it look like they were shot a lot?

Ya I would say they have been fired a lot.
So, it looks like the hammer slams into that mechanism every time the gun is fired, and when it's on safe theirs even more of the mech that gets hit by the hammer if it gets cocked and released.
I am wondering how many other p64 owners have experienced broken safety's and if their is something not right with the way the hammer is coming down or if their is a way to lighten that hammer drop so it won't crack in two with a new safty installed?
Or perhaps like you say it has been fired so much that something has to give sooner or later!
