rear sight issue
rear sight issue
Thanks to some of you guys here I'm the proud new owner of a '' was perfect'' 1968 P64. I own 5 pistols and this littel guy might be the most acurate one! It groups about 2 inches at ten yard and I've only shot aroun 50 rounds through it. the problem is it groups about 2 inches to the left. I tried to move the rear sight, first with a wooden dowel, next with a plastic punch, then a steel one. the only thing I acomplished was to mar the finish and cut my finger with shapnel. Any ideas? i'm thinking if i could find some kind of white epoxy, i could file out the right side of the back sight, build up the left side of the front sight. i might be able to bring it to point of impact and wind up with the better sights in needs anyway.
Re: rear sight issue
Actully I would have left it alone, 2 inches off at 30ft for defensive shooting with something that is not intended for target shooting is pretty good.
I would try it at a shorter range and see how it groups before you start messing with it again.

Re: rear sight issue
You are correct of course, but I have a S&W 3913 that shoots low and to the left and a .38 that shoots high and right so it's getting kind of old. I know pinpoint accruacy shouldn't be an issue in a defense situation, but I can't help but ask myself, what if I did need to take a shot when it would matter. would I remember to hold 2 inches to the right?
Re: rear sight issue
i'm the same way. i like my firearms to be accurate. i have all my rifles dialed in at 50 to 100 yards. its fun when you can shoot down pistol casings @ 50 with a ruger 10/22.
my P-64 shoots left at 10 yards. after fifty rounds the left side of the target is gone and the right is basically untouched. ive tought about filing down the rear sight a little, but decided against it because "my luck" i will screw it up, and it will be worse.
my thoughts are if i can hit a 8 inch circle at 10 yards, i'll just aim for center mass of an attacker and i should be able to put one in. and to be honest are you really gonna have time to aim? or point?

Re: rear sight issue
I got it. After reading some blogs from this site and others, here's what I did. I put my punch in the freezer for a couple of hours. Next I heated up the the dovetail notch with a bick lighter. (I've done a lot of metal work, so I knew about how hot to get it) then touched the rear sight in a couple places with the frozen punch to cool it. The sight moved with the first pop!
Re: rear sight issue
you have to take some pictures and explain the punch and bic project to me. i would love to adjust my rear sight a little just wondering where to place the frozen punch to get the thing to move. sounds neat.
