I just picked up a P-83 and am having a fairly serious problem with it. If I release the magazine with the slide back, the slide releases on its own and the hammer drops. If I have a magazine in, slide back, and release the slide with the slide release lever, the hammer drops.
The pistol is certainly fairly used, but none of the parts appear to broken. I could, of course, be wrong about this. It has been well-cleaned twice, but I have not fully disassembled it.
Also, there is a spring near the hammer that seems to be attached to nothing, and moves fairly freely. It appears to be this spring - http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =218680724
Any insight into this issue would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to doing serious work on Makarov-style pistols, and could not find any information regarding my particular issue on here.
Thanks,
Brian

Re: P-83 Problem
Picture of spring appears to be same spring used in Russian Makarov handgun. It might just be the SEAR spring.

Re: P-83 Problem
Part #22 is the safety lever spring according to a diagram (spring in the Gunbroker Auction). #25 on a P-83 diagram should be the sear spring.
