any advise about TIG Welding a Hammer Strut

Post by 502davids »

I have a hammer strut that the little piece that surrounds the pin on the hammer has broken off. My friend is a good TIG welder and has done jobs like filling holes from a scope on a barrel with lots of success. I was just wondering if the hammer strut was welded then grided down to original shape and redrilled and notched if it would work.

Has anyone ever done any TIG welding on gun parts to fix them and does the hammer strut have to be hardened?????

TIG welding is an industry application when it comes to welding up parts to reshape, rebuild, or repair them. Lot's of 1911 smiths do it where necessary, particularly the frame tangs. I say go for it, and I would harden it, but I defer that to Norm's advice.

Well, to let you all know the TIG weld job was a huge success. No, I did not have another strut to go off of but I did make a sketch trace of the existing one and reshapped it off of the sketch. I don't know if it is exactly 100% correct but it is close enough that it will work and I will have to do a little fileing and fit but should work great.
