I have never shot a gun before today and I'm a 23 yr old male, but I do have a 1975 P-64 on layaway at the moment.
On to the report! I met up at the range with a friend I work with today he is somewhere in his early fiftys. He brought a S&W rimfire .22 range pistol, 9mm Ruger p94, taurus 357 and a Makarov (his old carry piece when he used to carry.) We shot from 10 yards.
First he had me fire the Makarov,

After that I shot the S&W rimfire .22 range pistol. After shooting the Makarov I was not even sure it fired the first round. It had pretty much no recoil. Accuracy was way better this time, hit target every time. I ran 50 rds through it. Was fun for plinking but I see no other use.

The Ruger p94 came in close second for me! It had more recoil than the Makarov but did not hurt to shoot. It was a bit larger but felt great in my hand. Had a jam or two but from what he said a bit of cleaning and lube would fix that. Some shells came back and hit my face but no problem. Accuracy was a bit better than the Makarov but worse than the S&W.22 I ran 50 rds through it and plan on hunting down a SR9 after I pay my P-64 off.
The 357 mag intimidated me! I held on best I could said a little prayer and squeezed the trigger. BOOM! That was it? It almost felt like shooting the Makarov again just a bit more oomph. My hand felt just fine. Accuracy was great! To my suprize I started to shoot out the bulls eye. I ran about 30 rds through it.
Today was great fun and a learning experience. Before today I shot a .22 rifle long ago I was probably 10. Today I changed that and am very happy I did! Only downside (if you want to call it that) is I want to pay off my P-64 right away!
Also I have a couple of questions.
How would you compare a Makarov to a P-64 in terms of accuracy, recoil and comfort?
and
Is the Ruger p94 about the same as the SR9? I know the SR9 is newer.
Thanks everyone for all the great info on here while I was lurking and inspiring me to purchace my first gun a P-64!
Also a pic of myself and the Makarov
