Broken Safety

Post by coolbob »

Hi Guys, first let me say its great to be here. I bought my P-64 a short time ago simply because of the price, but I have since found out how nice of a little gun it really is. I also didn't realize the following this gun has. It's great to find a place like this to share common interests about this gun.

After I shot off about 10 clips one day, I noticed the safety didn't work anymore. It was stuck in the "off" position. I couldn't even move it with a pair of needlenose pliers. I proceeded to disassemble the weapon and upon removing the safety lever, I found the entire assembly had broken in half. I inspected the weapon further and not seeing any more damage, I reassembled it. I shot off 3 more clips of hornady ammo to check it's operation and it fires just fine.

The safety assembly is a barrel shaped mechanism with the lever attached at one end. It fits through the back end of the frame and seems to be held in place by the firing pin. Like I said, it doesn't seem to be causing any firing problems, but I would still like to have the comfort of a properly functioning safety. I ordered a set of walnut grips from Marschal, so I want to keep this gun, but I do want it in as good of shape as possible.

I spent a few hours scouring the web for parts for this gun, but there's not much available. My local gunshops suggested I just buy another gun to use for spare parts.

Do any of you have any ideas on where to find a safety mechanism or has anybody else ever had this same problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That's the down side I was worried about with these pistols. I feared some part would break and then I'd be S.O.L. Someone said I could just buy another...which defeats the low cost benefit and doesn't mean the safety won't break on that one too.
Wonder how much a machine shop would want to make one?

Norm,

Thanks for your reply. I was shooting Blazer 95 grain ammo when I noticed the safety wasn't working. I had also shot about 2 clips worth of Hornady 95 grain before I started using the Blazer so its hard to tell exactly when the safety actually broke. Possibly, it could have had a hairline crack from someone else shooting it before I bought it and it just decided to break completely for me.

In any case, I am still going to keep the weapon. I don't feel it is dangerous to operate and it is enjoyable to shoot. I'll be going to the gun show in Harrisburg the second week of June so who knows, maybe I'll find spare parts or even another P-64 there.

Keep an eye on this forum too. A guy parted out his broken P64 on the board a few weeks ago. Never know, someone else might turn their misfortune into a boon for the boards.

UPDATE

I bought this gun at Cabela's a few weeks ago. I went back today and found out the gun has a 30 day warranty. They will repair it if they can, or replace it if they can't. They have a few of these in stock if you can believe that! So it looks like I get a new safety either way. And the best part is that it won't cost me anything but a little gas money. I will keep up on this and let everyone know what happens. Their price is reasonable enough, I just may buy another one anyway.

UPDATE: Cabela's called today. I wasn't home, the wife took the call. They said their gunsmith has ordered the parts necessary for repair and it should be ready within a week or possibly two. I went down there today to try and find out where he ordered a new safety from, but nobody knew. In any case, they had a few P-64's in stock and they were on sale for $179.99. I bought another one and 4 boxes of Blazer ammo for it, along with 10 boxes of Herter's ammo for my Yugo SKS and 2 boxes of extra ammo for my 91/30 Mosin Nagant. I'm sitting here cleaning the P-64 right now. It isn't a new pistol, but it is in pretty decent shape. I shot off three clips after I brought it home and it shoots just fine so now it gets a well deserved cleaning and dry lube. I can't wait to get my other one back. I'll have two of these little work horses in my stable. One as a daily carry and the other as a spare. I may order another set of grips from Marschal, but I'll wait to see if the first set I ordered ever arrives. I'll upload a picture of both when I get my first one back.

Well Cabela's called again. It seems as though their gunsmith is unable to locate a new safety. They will either trade me another P-64 they have in stock, or let me put the money towards another firearm or merchandise. I'm going down there tomorrow morning. Tomorrow is my day off so I'm going to spend some time looking around to see what else they have. I do like the idea of 2 P-64's, but who knows what I'm liable to decide on. They have quite a bit of military surplus rifles and sidearms, so I have allot of choices. My wife says she'll keep the front porch light on for me because it will take me all morning and most of the afternoon to make a decision!

Disassemble, clean thoroughly along with cleaning firing pin chamber & round indicator chamber, with a good solvent and LIGHTLY lube safety assembly with Slide Glide, then carefully reassemble.

I am not sure how to take apart the firing pin and safety assembly is it difficult?

Final Update. Cabela's did not have another P-64 when I got there (bummer), so I ended up getting $200.00 worth of Makarov ammunition for the one P-64 I still have. I am going to a gun show the second week of June, so maybe I'll find another P-64 there. I really do like this firearm and plan on it being my main carry. It fits well into a shoulder holster or simply into a rear pocket in a pair of bluejeans. A bit of good news; I checked Marschal's website and my walnut checkered grips are on their way! I will post a picture of my pistol wearing the new grips when they arrive.
