Hi-Point 40 JCP Safety Lever Mod

Post by juniustaylor »

It's really not that extreme of a mod. However, it was somewhat difficult to actuate the thumb safety with the shooting hand. Often my thumb would slip off and get roughed up by the rough/sharp surface of the lever. Anyway, I got tired of it and fixed it.

Materials:
Thumb button off a knife blade
Dremel
Drill and small bit
Bench Vise

I simple unscrewed the thumb button from a knife blade I had lying around. I used the threaded shank portion. I drilled a hole in the safety lever and pressed the button into the hole using the bench vise. I cut off the threaded portion that wasn't needed and smashed it with vise grips like a rivet. The bench vise would have worked for that as well. The thumb lever is somewhat wobbly by design so sometimes it's a bit tough to position the lever from Fire to Safe, but there is NO difficulty moving it from Safe to Fire, which was my ultimate goal. I shoot two-handed, so my supporting hand will position the safety from Fire to Safe if need be. The back side of the button slightly rubs the slide where the red dot is, but I don't care on this $180 gun. As long as it does what I want, I am not really concerned. This is practically a tackle box gun, able to get beat up and dirty without hurting my feelings.

The safety lever can be a little stiff. I Got three C9 Hi points and a 995 carbine for truck guns. Heavy and ugly but accurate and function flawlessly. I travel on two-track in the oil patch and even tho I carry a G26 and CZ-82 or Makarov in the console, I don't mind having an inexpensive piece to use and abuse under "less than sterile" conditions. Never know when you find some time in the sagebrush to shoot and let off some steam or to take down a coyote. Not guns that I CCW but sturdy for what they are. I may look into adjusting the lever on one myself.

The "Seat Buddy" (Hi-Point) is nice but difficult to reach for a cross-draw.

I forgot to mention, I did have to take my Hi-Point apart to do this. You have to remove the roll pin and remove the slide assembly. Be careful so the recoil spring and guide don't go flying off. ;) Anyway, once the slide assembly is removed, you can remove the safety lever.
