Saiga-12... My other passion (moneypit)

Post by paulski »

I would like to introduce you all to the most powerful firearm available to the civilian populous without a federal stamp.
It will most likely be classified by the current administration as a destructive device eventually.
But we keep handing the Benelli guys their buts at trap shoots, so we have a leg to stand on to resist that move. (unlike the "street-sweeper")

This is the Saiga-12.

Image

It is a Russian gas operated semiautomatic 12 gauge magaziene fed shotgun. based on the stamped AK-47 platform/design.

I purchased it when I got tired of not being able to find ammo to pistol shoot with, but saw 100 rounds of 12 gauge for $20.00.

Since I did, I found that it is a lot like our beloved P-64 in the aspect that they need a little attention out of the box, but after a couple of fixes, you have one hell of a firearm.

The only drawback is that the Polish don't make one... Yet.

I like the tinkerers guns. I don't know why, I just think that making something your own, one of a kind, is just cooler than my glock out of the box.

SAIGA
also produces the modern AK-47.
Due to 922r compliance laws, ALL long-guns must enter the US in a sporting configuration.
this kinda sucks, but it is kind of cool too, I mean it is essentially a dremmel & simple tool "build your own evil rifle platform".

This is a pic of my Saiga-12 (S-12) last month.

I made the Dragunov stock. Right after that, I decided to convert/restore it to AK configuration.
It is currently stripped down to the bare metal (which I have polished & soon will blue), the trigger moved forward, & in the process of being converted to an "AKS-12" (AKM Russian wood takeoff stocks, AK sight block, AK front sight ect...) In short an AK chambered in 12-gauge! :D

I cant figure out how to attach multiple images here, so I replied to my own post...

This is how hardcore an S-12 can get. I think Bob & Tony @ Tromix sell these for $2,000.00 or so. You need a $200.00 federal SBS stamp to buy it. Pictured on it is an MD-20, 20 round drum, A factory Saiga 12 goes for $550.00 or so.

I started with the Saiga 410 a bunch of years ago and moved up to the 12 then down to the 20 gauge. I have only modified the 12 with a polychoke for duck hunting. My 20 has been changed a bunch including folding stock, pistol grip, trigger group, trigger guard, rifle sights front and rear, polychoke, gas valve, and of course gas plug. Now I just need to round up some higher cap mags for it. The 12 and 410 have larger mags but not too many options for the 20, yet

Try these guys:

http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=50474
http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=51346

They are a business member on the Saiga-12 forum.
They are focusing on S-20 accessories.
Their tooling for the 10 rd got messed up due to a miscommunication, so they think it will end up being a 12 or 13 round mag.

EDIT....
Actually, small world.
Looks like you're on that top thread now that I read it.

I'll leave the info up for anyone who should stumble upon it though

Yeah I have been watching and waiting for some good news from them and a couple of others that have been making noise about making mags. Very cool shotguns and easy to modify.

Very nice gun, I saw them at the last gun show with the 20 round drum attached. Dang kool.

paulski, awesome job on that Saiga! That is one very cool shotty indeed. Saiga-12 is now on my short list of must-have guns.

I can relate to your original post about switching over to shotguns because of the pistol ammo situation. Shotgun shells seem to always be in stock at stable prices. I bought a shotgun (Rem. 870 .20 gauge) recently and am enjoying shooting the heck out of it. My indoor range allows slugs only, still not cheap but at least supply isn't a worry.

I like the wood on yours. I have a small home defense one myself:

I may have to get another one as I like to always have at least two examples of each gun on hand.
