Blown primer almost took out my P64 today

I was at the range today to sight in some rifles etc.. when I decided to fire the P64 a little before I came home.

I pulled the trigger and smoke and burning powder came spraying out the ejection port. Didn't really burn me but it did scared the crap out of me...

There was a cartridge jammed in the ejection port so I had to take the slide off to clear it.

After looking things over, I noticed that the extractor was gone :-[

The primer had blow out when I fired it and most of the powder came out with it. It also blew out the extractor and the little pin that holds it in.

It was an indoor range and after looking around I actually found the extractor and the pin. The spring was still in the gun. I was sure something was broken so I packed the stuff up and came home.

After a little cleaning and inspection, I realized that nothing was broken and I was able to reinstall the extractor. Loaded up 3 or 4 mags and hand cycled them to see if everything was good to go.......all is well with the world.

It did get me thinking about the need for spare parts. I may get another P64 (3rd one) or buy some parts from one of the guys on eBay while they are still have them.

I still can't believe I found the tiny pin on the floor of the range...

The pin is easy to make and the extractor might be ably to cast one

but glade you found them.

what kind of amo was used

I was shooting Wolf ammo.

First time that has happened to me. I have shot about 800 rounds of it so far.

Thanks for posting your experience. Can you tell us what ammo you were using? I know you said Wolf, but that covers a lot of ground. Which Wolf ammo? Bullet weight, etc

Wolf 9mm Mak, 100 GR Copper FMJ Steel Cased.....the cheap stuff.

Is this that conical 109grain stuff??? This is why I stick to the 90-95grain rounds that the Makarov and P-64 were designed for...

Sorry that happened to you. It really does sound pretty scary. For years, I've bought Wolf ammo and been happy with it. In fact, Wolf might be at least somewhat responsible for the 'price war' that has brought down the costs of some handgun ammo. Recently, I bought 500 rounds of .40 and had buldging cases, that required partial disassembly of the pistol to get out. I tried shells from different boxes in the lot, but it was always about 1 out of 10-15 or so would have buldging cases.

Since then, I checked on other postings in message boards and found out that others had been having problems with Wolf in various calibers.

I hope that they get their act together. This incident with you could have resulted in serious injury to you, possibly to bystanders, and not to mention the destruction of your P64. Glad you weren't hurt.

I bought a case of that. I'ver fired 850 rounds through my Mak, my P-64, and my PA-63. I've had no trouble with it at all.

Glad your gun wasn't permanently damaged. Even more glad that you weren't permanently damaged...

Yep, gun is fine. Shot it a buch today. None the worse for wear.

Glad you found your spring. Hypothetically speaking, if someone were taking their P-64 apart to be nickel plated and the extractor spring took off like a rocket, never to be found, where would you get a replacement. I'

Sorry about that. I'm taking my PPK to the gunsmith Mon. to see if the extractor springs are the same. I did find one on ebay for $21.00 but I'm still looking. Any ideas? Wolff? Thanks Don
