What causes this?

Sometimes when I load my gun the loaded button doesn't stick all the way out and the slide isn't all the way forward. It actually happened to me at the range today gun went bang, bang, and then it had no trigger. I looked at it, noticed the button wasn't out and i pushed the slide all the way forward, the button popped out, and i continued to fire.

That was scary because i would hate to have a gun go bang bang and the trigger stop working in a fire fight.

Failure to go into battery. Potential causes: Dirty gun, weak recoil spring, magazine issue, feed ramp, extractor issue or grip.
Has the gun been completely cleaned?
Does this happen with all ammo and/or magazines?
Is the feed ramp covered with copper?
Are you racking the slide with the safety on or off?
Are you using any crazy lubricants?

One last thought...the gun needs to be broken in -- have you run at least a few hundred rounds through it?

I bought the gun from an individual on this board and he said he cleaned and detailed it. I have field stripped it. I changed the hammer and the recoil springs 19, 20 pound, and polished the feed ramp.

When it had the original springs it did this once in awhile when i was manually putting bullets in and ejecting them. It doesn't do it as much as it used to.

I have put almost 500 rounds through it and when i was shooting today i was putting the safety on, loading six rounds in a mag, and chambering the first round with safety on. Then i would take the safety off and fire the first shot da and all the rest sa.

Nope, all I ever shot through this was silverbear ball ammo.

I think that leaves grip or mag. Any blood (slide bite)? Are you using surplus mags and does it happen with more than one mag?

Well I just have one mag. I tried to loosen the grips a bit and clean stuff up with some breakfree. I have never cut myself on the gun.

never drop a round in the chamber on a auto loader always feed from the mag, you could damage the extractor

Norm, I don't follow what you are saying. I am using the magazine I never manually load one round into the chamber. Is it ok to put the safety on and jack a round in rather than keeping the safety off and jacking a round in and using the decocker?

I don't usually chamber a round with the safety on, but I wouldn't think it would make any difference as to the loaded round indicator sticking out or it not going into battery. My only suggestion is to "never" take anything for granted with any gun, rule #1, all guns should be considered loaded, yours or others.... period. Not that the person you bought it from wasn't truthful as to condition, but rule #2 is to always thoroughly clean your weapon regardless of where you got it, especially weapons that have been stored and/or re-arsonaled for years as the P-64's have been. Usually they take a complete cleaning by breaking it down completely and soaking it least over night. Then if that doesn't solve the problem then you probably have a mechanical issue, ie., springs come to mind first, but not being a gunsmith I'll let those that know the gun inside and out express their thoughts on the rest.

I'll 2nd the advise given for a good overnight soaking. I use mineral spirits followed by compressed air.
Only time i've had a pistol fail to return to battery was due to a weak recoil spring. Installed a new spring and my problem was solved.
