Norm,
Thanks for the reply on buying some stainless steel rod to make firing pins out of. Wish that I had my Pops old metal lathe. When he passed on my sister sold all of his metalworking tools to include a milling machine, drill press plus his muzzloading barrel rifling machine, plus the metal lathe that she knew I wanted. >:(
I never even was contacted to at least buy some of his old machinery. Sad when family can be shi_ heads.

Anyone with the expertise/skills/tools to replicate a firing pin willing to make some? Sounds like there's definitely a demand for them. Heck, I'd be willing to pay 20-30 bucks for one.

I've been looking in my area for a shop that can do them. I figured if I can fix a nuclear powered aircraft carrier, I can get some firing pins made. I'll let you guys know what the deal is after the first of the year. As long as the minimum run is reasonable, I would front the money.

I'd be in for 2.

I just got a reply from a local shop. He is confident that he can help us out. Naturally, he wants to know material type and/or rockwell hardness. I told him that the normal replacement material is drill bit stock or other "high impact" type steels, maybe some of you old hands have that sort of info.
I won't know cost until I meet with him this week to show him a pin and hear what he has to say. I'll keep you guys posted.

I think I answered my own question today regarding the best material - I found "Fatigue Proof" steel on the Brownell's site. I will see the guy tomorrow with firing pin in hand.

Irishbob,
Thanks there will be a long line of customers for those. I'd be in for one.

Stopped to see the machine shop guy this afternoon. Here is the report:
1. He stated that the pin is not a simple (to machine) item. He and I discussed the challenges in the machining sequence (I was a mechanical designer in one of my former lives).
2. He had questions regarding the specific steel and Rockwell hardness of the firing pin I provided (the first part of his liability concern).
3. He is concerned about possible liability issues should a pin fail and cause injury to the shooter. I told him that a release of liability would be included in the sale of the new pins. I believe that if the proper steel, hardness and machine work is employed there should be more than a reasonable expectation of a reliable product (I also used to be a QA Manager for Submarine Systems).
4. He kept the pin and will sit down with his CNC team on Monday to see if it is technically possible and cost effective. I will let you guys know. He also said that if his CNC guys say no, he would try to get me the name of a guy who may be able to take the job on.
All in all, I believe his concern is more of the liability issue than the actual manufacture challenge.
I also left him a sample of a magazine floor plate and asked for a quote on a flat plate for those of you that have expressed a desire to have your P 64 slip in and out of your pocket without the finger rest hanging up.

You might also want to show him a the legal disclaimer that comes in the wolf springs as a guide, to show him your not asking any thing that some one is already doing.

you know there is a difference in a round hammer firing pin and the triangle hammer firing pin, one is longer than the other not by much but there is a difference
