As you can see there is some brown coloring on the lighter colored metal. Is this rust or something else?
I just got this gun from J&G.
It doesnt seem like rust.
I was told by a gunsmith if you use the gun heavily before all of the cosmoline is removed, it turns to glue! I always use Gun Scrubber or even brake cleaner to clean them up when I buy them.
Well I actually learned something from the newbe question and greatly appreciate it and Norm's response. I've owned surplus guns for a while but didn't realize the trigger bar on my P64 was stained. I assumed it was a finish similar to the hammers and safeties on my Makarovs. I also greatly appreciate the patience most senior members show with new members on this board. For all I know this is the persons first gun and they may be new to computers / forums too.
There are many forums, and several local gun stores I don't frequent due to similar treatment of newbes. I don't see how it furthers the interest of gun owners to roughly handle people who want to join our ranks.
I'm very sorry that the search feature of this forum does not work very good. Maby if the design was not outdated and a little more user friendly. Maby like VBulletin boards.
I did do research and founds links like this... viewtopic.php?t=55
which still didnt explain much. I was hoping to find more information and better ways to remove it. Because I cannot remove it. I've tried all sorts of stuff and have even taken 000 steel wool to it. Its perm. stained.
Google did not provide much info on the subject either.

Merdenoms,
I think the stain is purely cosmetic, at least it doesn't interfere with how mine shoots. The bar is smooth and doesn't drag in any way I can identify. It will probably wear off with time or you could polish it off with a lot of time and some steel wool or other mild abrasive.
Personally, it's not worth the time to me. If you look at the gun in the assembly guide from P64 Resource the pistol has the stains too.
yea, im just not even going to worry about getting it off
I love this gun! I received it a few days ago and put 100 rounds through it so far. I've been shooting/buying a lot of pistols in the $500 price range over the past year and I actually like this gun just as much. My friend bought a glock a few months ago and we took our pistols out to shoot today. I made him mad because I was getting much better groups then him with the p 64 vs his glock. (He is new to shooting though)
My favorite pistols today are all in the $150 - $250 range. P64, Makarov or Tokarev are always on my person while a $1300 Kimber sits in the safe. Wish I would have discovered them when they were < $100 guns.
I just noticed mine has the same stain, but it is covering the whole part, so i just thought it was the color of it. also, ive seen other pix with it too.
same thing here. thought it would come out after overnight soaking and when it didn't just forgot about it. everytime I get a new gun(or new to me) I am so picky that I find something peculiar that I feel confirms my fear that just maybe this time I got gyped. but never had a raw deal yet and all my guns shoot much better than I could ever hope to shoot. (which might not be saying much)
