I was working on my 64 when a guy I worked with was looking for 2 tires for a friend.I had a pretty good set but his buddy was straped for cash.Don't know why but I asked if he had any firearms to trade. He shows me what I thought was a crappy m44. I took a chance and did the trade. It actually was not that bad.The shellac job was horrendous.Even if the ruskies were running out the back door of the factory they would do a better job. After disassembly and a good cleaning and stock refinish it shoots pretty decent. Now,back to the 64.With 18lb hammer spring,22 recoil spring and silver bear ammo it did not miss a beat.I have put the little bugger on notice that the honeymoon is over and I expect this excellance from here on out.

I'm thinking about buying some barreled receivers to have a couple more mosin's. I have a tack-driver m38 that I absolutely love. They're great rifles.

I have about four M-44s & several 91/30s, but my M-38 is my baby

This is mine - refinished (it was awfully neglected)

Very Nice Dickfunk! That looks great!
I am one of the purists about original finishes on mil-surp stuff, even arsenal refurbs, but draw the line if the weapon is beat up. After that I am a big fan of a total restoration. That looks sweet.
Do you have a source for barreled actions? I would like to do a custom Mosin. I have looked around and the prices for what I am up to are reasonable. Just looking for a good base, not some left over junk that they couldn't make a real rifle out of.
Thanks, Fritzhund

Thanks, man!
Poor thing had terrible pitting in some areas that even required grinding and new bluing. The stock was awful, as well.
I have a c&r, so I'm always looking for deals on these barreled receivers on gunbroker and other web sources. I certainyl don't have one definitive place to look.

I will when the new camera comes. I'm thinking about a Rebel XS (Canon)...

Is that a blond finish or is it the lighting? It is almost a spitting image of my refinish.A little more gloss perhaps.Unfortunately I have no camera(can't afford guns and cameras on a working mans salary yet).I used some leftover minwax stain my wife had.By the way was it the Poles or Finns that used the blond finish.I know the Russians had mostly the darker or cherry type tint. Also my recoil spring on the 64 was a 20 not 22 as I stated. This is my first long gun shooting or owning in over 30 years. Are we in the right place for this discussion. If not sorry to the administration.

While everyone is sidetracked I would like to ask if anyone has done anything about their M44's trigger. I was sold a "Polish" M44, which I thought would be a great companion to my P64, but got it home only to find it is Romanian. In any case it was in great condition and all cleaned up, but that trigger is pretty rough. I can't get good groupings with the combined front sight/trigger combo.
