Reloading the 9X18

Hi.

I am new to the 9X18 but not to reloading. I see from the manuals, the available bullet choices are few and the corresponding loads are few.

1) I also see that there are no loads for Unique. Why?

2) Any pet loads? I have Bullseye and HS-6 powder available which are two of several called out in the Speer manual.

3) I have purchased some 90 gr Gold Dots and some 100 gr Sierra FPJ. I saw somewhere that bullets over 95 gr were not recommended without further explanation. Is this true and why? Battering problems? Cycling problems?

Thanks in advance. As you can see, I am new to this board. I was pleasantly surprised to see a board for this gun even existed. I guess the internet does have something for everyone.

Hello Ronc,

Modern Reloading from Lee has a load for Unique...my favorite pistol powder, some people think it has too much muzzle flash, but I like that part. If I am in a gun fight at night, I will just run and dodge alot, like on TV....They list 3.8-4.2 grains with a 100 grain lead bullet. I am sure that would be fine with a 95 grain as well.

there are loads for Unique I use 4 grns of it when I use Unique

most Russian ammo they don't down grade the powder charge with the heavy bullets, and most heavy bullets the dia. is .364 to .365 and jamme up in the mags of the PA-63 and the P-64 because of width and length

Thanks. I just ordered the trimmer and dies. Hope to have something to test in a week or two.

I am trying to reduce the number of different powders I have. I like Unique because of its universality, 9mm to 45 acp. Great stuff. But a friend gave me his stock which included better part of a pound of Bullseye. A little goes a long way, doesn't it?

I don't buy Bullseye any more because it doesn't fill the cases up and to easy to double charge a case,
I like Unique , W 231, or Universal . for large pistol cases I use 2400 , H 110 , W 296 , or IMR 4227

Okay. I trimmed 9mm Luger to ~18mm. Worked better after I ground the tip off the 9mm Luger pilot 'cause it is real hard to get the Mak pilot into the smaller brass, even after expanding. (All Lee tools.) Final length was 17.7-17.9 mm.

I loaded some older 90 gr Speer Gold Dots with 6.3 gr of HS-6, CCI small pistol primers. I got average velocity of 1049, SD of 40, ES of 137, (n=16). Not so great but the brass came out nice. Length shrank to about 17.5mm but after decap/resize it is back to 17.8 or so. No malfunctions so I guess the length is okay.

For comparison, got average velocity of 960 on Blazer Aluminum, 95 gr TMJ (n=4) and 1020 on Federal American Eagle 95 gr FMJ (n=1). Temp was 60F. Ambient light got marginal so Federal might not be right. (Also, never make decisions on a single shot.)

Because I have jars full of 9x19 already resized and decapped for Luger, like I said above, I ground off the tip of a Lee trimming mandrel to about 18.15 mm. This fits the mouth of the resized 9x19. Chuck the holder in a drill press and trim away. The first load looks a little funny but after first firing, who would know?
