hey guys i just bought a 1971 p64 and really like it and my only problem is when i fire off about 3 shots the safety/de-cocking lever falls down and not sure what i need to do to fix it

Check the detent. Holding the gun like you would shoot it, it is on the left hand side in the slide. Just look and you will see it, take it out, however, do this in a clear plastic bag or thou might be looking for a detent because there is a spring behind it. Take this out carefully and you will notice a little thing that is shaped like a bullet. If it is rounded off thats your problem. All you have to do is carefully bring it back to a point without loosing length of detent. Also look at the grooves (they look like cat eyes) that are on the safety its self. Make sure that they dont have any burrs. If they do just get a small drill bit and by hand turn it several times in the groove and it should work like a champ. On the message board you will see one that says Official manual -dissambly-documents . This tells you step by step on exactly how to do this procedure. Good luck, it ain't hard when you get started just do it in a plastic bag. Trust me.

ok thanks for the input....ho long does it take to break the slide down and fix this?

k guys i just took my gun apart and the "detent" if thas what it is called it is rounded almost flat what is the best thing to use to bring back the point?

As I see it, you could try to reshape it, but, you could make it too short or get up with norm sutton and he can tell you how to make or, heck the may already have one made. Norm is the resident gunsmith for this board and a darn fine one I might add.

well i took it out and filed it to somewhat of a point and re-installed it now it is alot stiffer but havent had the chance to shoot it and see if the safety falls....if it does does any1 know where i can order a new plunger and spring? thanks for all the input so far

hey norm the parts list u sent didn't have the savety plunger on it do u know of any where else i could find one
