Ishapore Enfield

Gents,
Does anyone know of a new produced round for the Ishapore Enfield. Its a 7.62 X 51 or .308 NATO. There are warnings all over the rifle against using .308 Winchester. I have learned a little about casing thickness etc, I don't re-load, so I would like to purchase new stuff. Surplus is a little hard to come by. Anything new that would not be too hot of a load to shoot?

Thanks, it looks like there is several choices. I don't reload now, but you never know what the future might bring. For the moment I have some Indian ammo. Not sure how good it is, but at least I can try the rifle out. The rifle looks like its been to a Maaco paint booth. Its been painted gloss black and there was not any masking from other parts. Might tear it all apart and Duracoat it. The bolt really works smoothly and the bore looks new, the rest of it looks ok and has what appears to be waves or something at the muzzle end painted on the stock. Neat rifle for the money. Oh, $175.00 OTD. Pictures to follow shortly.

after cleaning re blueing and re oiling the stock

the heaver the bullet works the best in this rifle's about 165 gran bullet

That heavy black paint is typical of those Ishy's. You can strip it off relatively easy, though.

That looks good Norm. I'm convinced. At first I was thinking of leaving the paint, just trying to keep it original from India. But the more I play with this thing, the screws have been buggered up with the wrong size of screwdriver, those kind of things. If I kept it painted I would be forever looking at the poor maintenance and it would drive me nuts. I'm anal about some things and that is one of them. I can do blueing, might be easier than Duracoat. I like the rifle, well, just because. It's weird looking enough to like. Did you re-work your stock, I have these weird waves and would like to preserve that look. Interesting. The ammo is a big help. Dick Funk and Norm, what ammo do you use in yours?

I've not done one, personally, but I think most people remove all the stock pieces and use CtriStrip and some use Easy Off oven cleaner.

I used ACE hardware paint stripper on mine after I took it all apart , and on every thing, wash off with hot water & soap, buff the steel parts with 6" fine wire wheel then cold blued it , steeled wooled the stock after it dried with 0000 steel wool then put BLO on it, on small parts I heated with a propane torch to cheery red and drop in oil , I cut new head grooves in the screws with a small separating disk not to wide. there is one screw that should be drop in oil because it will become to brittle, and that's the one be hind the trigger housing it goes through the trigger housing the stock

I never bought any 7.62 x 51's , I'm a reloader and use range pick ups , I have about 300 to 400 rounds that I pick up and reloaded

I'll introduce you to reloading......but you'll have to get your own stripper.
I've been keeping an eye out for you. The local gun shows would be a good try. The Bill Goodman show is in Dayton this weekend at Hara Arena. You would most likely find surplus 7.62x51 there.

Well Norm, That yielded a ton of information, the paint was so thick, I couldn't see the date. There is a crest followed by the word RIFLE, then 7.62mm 2A, next is RFI last under that is the date, 1964. Gosh Dave, its awful nice of you to show me some things about re-loading, but why no stripper? ;D

Hey, to remove paint varnish etc. citristrip is great, but you have to remember to get some citristripper stopper or it will continue to strip for quite a while.. I have used it with really good results.
