19 Holes and a Peep Sight

I finally got to shoot my little MAS 36 today. I took a box of 20 Privi Partizan 7.5x54 and played. What a cool little rifle. I am definitely putting this baby back to as close to the original form as I can. Even with the cut down 17 1/2 inch barrel I put everything on the paper at 50 yards!

The first shot had me sitting under the shooting table with sand bags weighting down the rifle and my gloved finger pulling the trigger. I take no chances just on the off chance there is a problem of some sort and the whole darn thing blows up on me! :'( Obviously it didn't or this thread would have a very different title.

As you can see I put the other 19 rounds on the paper. I actual got 8 shots in a 3 1/2 inch group! This with the old standard issue peep sight.

That is the subject of my next question...how do you properly use a peep sight...or at least my French version???

There is a blade front sight and a whole drilled in a metal plate for the rear sight...how do you properly line these up for accuracy? There are no indicators that I can see to tell me where to locate the top/bottom/middle/shoulder of the front blade in the peep whole?!?!?! :'(

Obviously I figured out a way to hit the paper but I'd like to have better than a...guess I'll aim here this time and see where the bullet goes...chance for an accurate placement.

Any ideas?

With a post peep, look through the peep at your target, and put the post just *under* where you want to hit. If you're aiming at a bullseye, think of it as "a pumpkin on a post"...the "pumpkin" being in the center of your peep reticle, the post just under the "pumpkin". After you shoot it a while, you'll begin to get the hang of it. If you ignore the peep...just look *through* it...most things you want to shoot will naturally center in the circle. It's when you start thinking about it too hard that shots start wandering all over the place.

It's a hard transition from blade sights...when I was first shooting my brother's M1 carbine with that setup, I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. Now I'm not nearly as terrible

I'm so glad this rifle turned out to be a nice little shooter, it ain't much to look at now but I hope to change that as soon as I get my discount set up at Numrich... :-/

your shooting eye must be close enough to the peep so that your eye is forced to focus through the little hole. The peep sight blocks off your peripheral vision which enhances your forward vision (I don't know the proper term here) and allows you see distant objects better all the while maintaining your ability to keep the front sight post in focus.

The peep sight on your MAS seems oddly small for a battle rifle, but maybe it just seems that way from the pic...

This whole damn rifle IS oddly small. Remember the lighter the rifle the less the damage when dropped during surrender! I figured I'd say it before anyone else did..

I can figure how to hit the paper and as you can see I got off some pretty good shots. About 6 were standing (I don't know what the position is called) just standing and holding the rifle the others were with a sandbag for barrel support but most were with my elbows resting on the shooting table (very stable).

I just would like to understand the proper method to at least try to understand what I'm doing right and want to repeat or doing wrong and need to change. Trial and error I guess. I'm just very excited I don't have to eat this thing for Trent and can't wait to start ordering parts to make this look less like a toy gun!! ::)

I use the "6 o'clock Hold" on all sights as a reference point to see where the gun is shooting. The "pumpkin on a stick" analogy is the best way to explain it that I've heard yet ! Good and Easy. Remember: if you hold the sight the same way every time~ the bullet should hit the same place every time!

ok, now I'm confused, I had been taught to shoot with the front sight centered on the target (half way up a bulls eye circle, and I looked at a m16 instructional target and it says the same.

You have a POA and a 6 o'clock - some guns are just different.
