Trying for a one inch group.

Post by gunneyrabbit »

It was a fun day!
I spent the morning trying to put together a one inch group at fifty-five feet, resting on the mag base and just could not make it happen. I had several targets that came close but I guess my eyes and age just aren't going to allow it to happen. Best group I had was with Silver Bear HP with four of five shots touching and one flyer. Most groups averaged 3.5 to 4 inches with several being just under three point five inches. I did notice that I could tighten the groups by coloring the ten ring red, that helped a lot. Started using the tip of my index finger on the trigger and things improved again. I never have trained for extreme accuracy I and find it is a lot harder than rapid strings to the chest cavity at fifteen to twenty feet. What I do know is the P-64 is a very accurate pistol, it just needs the right person pulling the trigger to to make it function properly.

I salute your ambition and your skill! I can't even consider 1" groups at 55'.

I also don't seem to know how to shoot from a rest. I seem to get better groups with a two-hand grip than from a rest.

If I figure out how to do pictures I'll post a photo of my shooting from yesterday. It was pretty good for me.

Do you have pictures to post?

That is the problem isn't it, I can see either the sights or the target at that distance. Anything else is a blurry combination of both. :'(

One thing I notice when I shoot for accuracy is how well I'm controlling my breathing.

Hay Bender, are you inhaling, exhaling or holding your breath while you press the trigger. :)

Fair question GR - and I'm not sure if I'm ever consistent, I just know I shoot better when I pay attention. That maybe the beginning stage of Yoga onset ...

I usually shoot in the moment between exhale and inhale (not really holding your breath, because it's all breathed out)

yea I said breathed :P

but that's with rifles I haven't really tried with pistols.

Trent,
Its been many years since I've shouldered an M-16 but I vaguely remember our drill instructors kicking us in the pants until we had that locked into our brains.
How soon we forget. :'(

I don't know about others, but I learned 'shoot during a slow, steady exhale' growing up in Boy Scouts. Learned it with rifles, usually stick with it when doing slow fire for pistols.

I've noticed that usually gives me a few additional ticks to let my heart slow, and gives me a good amount of time before I'm in the 'breathed out' point and start getting into 'ack, I'm now holding my breath to keep from inhaling' in case I need it.

No yoga here, but plenty of breath control and lung capacity from being a vocalist. 8-)
