Thanks Norm I may just order a Murray's FP replacement.
I was wondering about stripper clips. Necessary, un-necessary, difficult to function etc??? Are there any specific "original equipment" stripper clips on the market or are the after market (ebay, gunbroker etc) fine?
Didn't get any with the SKS so I'll have to find some. Just wanted some "expert" opinions before I go buying stuff.
And if I can't get an expert opinion I listen to you guys so chime in!
Ba dum bum...cymbal crash! ;D
Couldn't you just hear the rim shot!?
Thanks guys!

carguy,
Love the drum roll......... ;D
I only have two SKS's, a 1951 Russian and a Yugo 59/66, and they both take the after marker strippers very well, however, there's a knack to using just about any stripper clip. Soon I am going to take the grenade launcher and sight off, it just doesn't do anything for me. I hear the Norinco's are nice, I like the Yugo's because they are pretty much carbon copies of the Russian SKS's and are built heaver like the Russians because the Yugo and Russian ammo is hotter that most other manufactures that make the 7.62x39, and I like hotter.
Let us know how she goes when you get a chance.

Howdy Carguy ! I have two SKS's and Both are great shooters ! Accuracy in the chinese SKS i have , is fantastic !(even after bump firing numerous times) I bought 2 20rnd. mags for them at a gun show here and i got the wrong kind( i guess there are two or more styles of interface in the different SKS rifles?) anyways the ones that i bought have a squared front locking area and the ones i NEED have an extended ledge that locks the front of the mag into the frame.(as is normal)
needless to say , i have 40$ worth of unusable SKS magazines. From what i understand... there is also a "D series" SKS that uses the AK style magazine (with no front locking piece?) and is wider than a "standard" SKS magazine. So far i have tried two different mag styles in it and neither will stay in place without shooting loose and failing to load. The "Box" style front piece is possibly made for the Yugo and or Newer style SKS's ? anyways , i just shoot them with the 10 rnd integral magazine and reload after ten shots. Great Fun !!! All this is just to say that if you move from Mass. and buy a 20 or 30 rnd. mag , be sure to test fit them before you buy and be sure to tug downward really hard on the mag to make sure it can't be pulled loose. If any of you guys have the older style 20 or 30 rnd mags and want to trade for the newer box front style mags , I have two 20 round mags i cannot use. I tried the mag with the flat bar style front but it also shot loose after a few shots . i guess i need thje "Z" shaped front style. Anyways , Carguy , Yogo and shoot it and have a blast! I don't shoot the 1952 Tula SKS i keep it in the cabinet. It is in very good shape and still has cosmoline in it. I got lucky and bought it for $150 from a guy who never looked it over to see what it was.(of course , I didn't know either when i bought it!)
I am reloading Ammo for mine and i enjoy taking the chinese model out nearly everytime i go shoot. I paid $200 for it and shoot the heck out of it. here is a short clip of me bump firing it:

carguy,
I store mine with the bolt closed with the trigger not pulled because I didnt want my bolt to crack again. But now that I know about Murrays Firing Pins (thanks Norm) I am going to have to get one of those and store it with the trigger pulled.
Stripper clips are almost as fast as changing a magazine when you get used to them and are a necessity for the SKS owner...you will need a minimum of 20 stripper clips ;D

G: That was frightening...and I don't mean the bump firing!! ;D
The stripper clips...I was concerned more about there being any "brands" that might not function properly. Like some P-64 after market mags.
I did get to the range this afternoon and shot off 200 rounds..........wooooooooooh whoooooooooo!! :-* :-* :-*
Why didn't anyone tell me this rifle was so much fun before now!?!
Clean as a whistle, shot Barnul and Brown Bear without a problem. Accurate as heck (a little high left but that might just be me and my excitment), managable recoil just great, great, great!
Did I say this is a great rifle and a blast to shoot?!
Breaking it down is easy as pie. But does the cleaning rod screw into anything? I didn't play with the cleaning kit in the buttstock so maybe it would help but the rod seems short when I took it out and just rattled around without securing into anything when it was back under the bayonet. But that is my only complaint. What a blast!! Ammo is already on the way...now the mission is to buy more!!!!!!! ;D

Carguy,
I have two Maadi's (ak's), an L1A1, a Bushmaster M4, two M11/9's, a 10/22, and a Norinco SKS paratrooper. I've got to tell you that the most enjoyable of all of them to shoot is the Norinco SKS. It's handy, quick pointing, reliable, simple, and just plain cool. I'm scoping out the auction sites for another paratrooper as a truck gun...if the price is right. Of course, I need a mauser first!
You'll love the SKS. Forget the fact that 10 years ago they were $70......at $200 you simply will not even come CLOSE to the accuracy, reliability, and simplicity in any other centerfire semi-auto.
PS: the L1A1 is pretty darn fun to shoot too! The Bushmaster is boring. I really just don't like AR-15's. My neighbor is building one right now....and it's so "railed-out" that I asked him if he was planning on mounting his Jeep under the forearm! That crap is getting out of control.

Volfandan: That is what excites me so much. It is just plain fun and easy to shoot! For $200 how can you go wrong and ammo is all over the place for cheap too!!
The icing on the cake was my range buddy (my 20 year old son) said I was nuts, it's ugly, it's heavy and akward, every negative thing he could think of. All he wants is a WASR...Ak looking "black rifle" thing, but his FID card won't allow him anything that has hi capacity mags (over 10 rounds) so he has to be nice to me or I won't let him play with my stuff (or buy stuff for him to play with). He shot it and didn't want to give it back.
Barnett: You are right, I do want to get that butt pad just to add a little size to it. Good call.

I thought I'd share a few pics of my Chinese SKS.

A close up of my stock extension.

We mounted my scope in just the right spot

This stupid camera gives everything a blue tint. >:(

yeah, my shooting buddies have never learned. They keep buying AK variants, building AR's (blllaahh, I think I just threw up a little in my mouth), and so on. Every time we shoot, they want to just keep chucking mags into the AK's. And, I love my AK's....but there's just something about the SKS. All due respect to Mikhail K, but Sergei made a FINE rifle.....and didn't have to rip off a German design to do so.
Holy crap, did I just knock AR's and AK's in the same post? No offense to anyone here....the aforementioned rifles are great guns....but when you compare $ for $, the SKS is probably impossible to beat.
What really sold me on the SKS:
Back in '94 I was in a local gun shop where they had NIB Norinco SKS's for $69 (I know, I know...hindsight = 20/20). I knew nothing about them, and asked the salesman about it. He pointed to a NIB Mini-30.
"That Ruger Mini-30 is (remember, 1994) $390, and is 7.62x39. You can hold a 1" to 1.25" group at 100yds after the first 5 shots. But, run even 25 or 30 rounds through that barrel...and you'll be lucky to hold 4" groups. You can run 200 rounds through that $69 rifle, and you'll still be under 2" at 100yds. Now, you tell me which rifle to buy?"
I've never owned a Mini-30 or Mini-14, but his sales pitch sure left an impression on me. And, thanks to Carguy....I'm wanting another SKS. Dangit....I'll never get my mauser or S&W .357!!!!

Volfandan: You are welcome...that's for teasing me the other day for living in Mass...we're even.
Barnett: What is that butt pad you have on the SKS? Is there a specific brand, size etc...I like it. I saw one that screws on using the current butt plate screw but I'd rather leave it alone and slip one one like yours. Nice placement on the scope...luck or planned that way?

what happened to all of the Yugo 59's? They used to be all over SGN just 6 or 8 months ago. Now you just see the 59/66's with grenade launchers. I just like the old simple ones, and if I can't fire grenades from it....well, you get the idea.

Carguy,
the butt pad on mine is made by Capco. I tried looking for one the other night when I first told you about it, I couldnt find one but I will keep an eye out. It actually uses the stock butt plate screws to hold it on, it has a 3/8 inch lip that slips onto the stock to keep moisture from seeping in between the pad and the butt plate.
Scope mount was planned that way, we didn't install the mount and scope until I had the butt pad on. That way eye relief could be properly measured and the scope set with respect to the stripper clip notch.
I've taken a few deer with it. Ground Hogs quickly scamper way beyond 150 yards away from me! I have even shot it at a 500 yard target!! 500 yards is WAAAAY far for this rifle but I was able to keep the holes on the target, just have to use some good old Kentucky windage.
