91/30 MN Scope Mount

I picked up an inexpensive scope/mount combo that replaces the rear sight on my Mosin Nagant 91/30. I cannot zero this thing in. Each time I adjust it...it seems to change after the next shot.

Anyone familiar with this set up? Any secret hints to make it easier to sight it in and keep it that way??

I shot 50 or 60 rounds today over a 2 hour timespan (some chit chatting and plinking with a P64 and 22 Savage in between attempts to get this thing on. I longed for the iron sights after this afternoon's event!

I don't think that setup will hold zerro very well with the recoil of that gun

Your 2 cents are worth a million $$$. I knew this would be inaccurate at best as it was inexpensive but I wish I could just get it to stay on target longer.

I was hoping for a little more fun at 100 yards...right now I'm struggling to keep it on the paper without adjusting every few rounds at 50 yards.

Oh well, live and learn. I'll play somemore and make the best of it.

just found this, I have also seen somewhere also a pretty reasonable price on repro 91/30 sniper scopes but can't remember where.

That is the reason I picked up the weaver mount and scope set up that replaces the rear sight. I was not about to drill and tap etc my Izzy. It isn't worth all that much but I do love it and wanted to make it more fun to shoot not chance destroying it. If I really want to play seriously with a scope there are plenty of the sniper repros out there (at least advertised out there).

I'll figure this out to make my $65 investment worth while.

sounds good, I'm also in the same boat, I cant/don't want to drill/tap my stuff. Although I do in the future want to take an 91/30 or mauser that does not have a good stock (I don't want to tear up a perfectly good rifle) put it in one of those modern stocks and add a soviet Posp type scope (what the dragunov uses), bypod ect

Keep us all up to date, I have been thinking about the rear sight replacement setup, but was unsure of the accuracy.

to add to this I have a drill and tap mount I got somewhere but dont like to drill and tap.. was just looking at different sites ,gunbroker and etc. and found the one you got.. have been going back and forth to get it.. now I will wait to see if you can sturdy it up a little maybe another screw from side of mount ,,, please keep us all informed bet a lot of us are really curious.. how was the eye relieve working...

The screw on receiver mount is your best bet if you want a rigid mount.
I've installed a couple of the Advanced Technology mounts and it's straight forward. You do have to modify the bolt handle for the receiver mount. The AT mount comes with the bolt handle although it is a bit bogus. There are other bolt handle options.
We're talking about 75 dollar rifles...how much can a few screw holes and a hacked off bolt handle lower the value? After all, a worthwile scope will cost at least 3 times the price of the rifle.
The rear sight replacement mount would be better suited for a scout scope or red dot due to eye relief. Keeping these stable is the trick.
Doris, my Bridgeport, loves to drill holes in rifles. If you're in the SW Ohio area I'd be happy to help out any of the board members looking to install a screw on mount.

I am embarrassed to say I don't know what you are refering to. The eye relief?? I do remember reading that it has it so I figured it would be better to have it that not. The scope is pretty good. It is a little further away from my eye than I would like. A traditional scope would be mounted a good 2+ inches closer so part of my issue may have been not properly sighting through the scope and not that it moves (there are 3 differnt adjustment screws to properly level and secure the mount (I think that is part of my problem) I "sort" of leveled it then mounted the scope, went to the range and started "adjusting".

I aill update everyone as I progress. I am off this week, have a few projects around the house (carpeting, painting) but will spend a couple of days at the range.

you might want to try long roll pins to hold the scope in place instead of just drift pins because of the spring action of a roll pin

You might want to check with "grayfox" he built a M-N rig with a synthetic stock with mount and scope, but his rid was simple and I think the mount attached under the stock, below is a url to his pic, scroll down 9 post and he has a pic of his set up. I am thinking of doing the same thing except using the original M-N stock.

sorry maybe I was not clear on that but you answered what I wanted to know.. eye relief or long eye relief means the distance between the eye and the lens and how it sights in. of course this is an individual thing.. most of the combos I have seen are long eye relief scopes (also known as pistol scopes.)

Eye relief is the distance from the eye to the ocular lens of the scope. There is a range of distance that will provide a view of the entire field through the scope. Too close or too far and you lose field of view.
Eye relief is designed into the scope.
Scopes that will work well on the Mosin rear sight mount will need more eye relief than a scope mounted over the receiver.
Pistol scopes have the greatest eye relief.
Scout scopes are intermediate eye relief scopes that should be perfect for your rear sight mount. Burris makes a nice 2.75X scout scope that is compact as well.
If you are using a normal rifle scope rather than an extended or long eye relief model, the screw on receiver mount is about the only choice.

1) The scope is actually mounted with screws that tightly fit the pin hole from the sight and screw into the base of the mount that sits inside the original rear sight mount (need to remove the leaf spring first).

2) Grayfox's MN project has the "rear sight mounted scope" setup that I bought (or at least it sure looks like it).

3) Eye relief is good then as I can see the target with little effort. I feel that if the scope were closer it might be easier as the more magnificantion I put on the scope the quicker I lose the sight picture with little head movement. Maybe that is just the magnification.

I think my problem is more my lack of mechanical ability.
