22# recoil spring doesn't quite fit

Post by doctormike »

A number of folks have offered me excellent advice on polishing up and recoil-taming my P-64. I got a 22# recoil spring from Wolf and it almost-but-doesn't-quite fit. I can't quite get the slide back on.

I'd rather not clip the spring if I don't have to. Normsutton said I might have to "flatten the spring." How the heck do I flatten the spring?

What's up doc? Sorry couldn't resist. Here's how I did it.

I had the same problem. I ended up firing up the Ryobi (Dremel clone) and used a cut off wheel as a D/A grinder and flattened the two ends down to look like the factory spring. Quenched with oil while doing it so as not to overheat and change the spring steel. Also used a small stone to round off the end of the wire on the tight end towards the chamber. It was really digging into the barrel pretty good. If your not to confident in your use of grinders you may have to drop to the 20# spring. I've been using die grinders for the last 30+ years and they've become second nature to me now. Just take it slow and keep cooling the metal and you should be good.

You can use a sandpaper disk and a drill do both ends of the spring

doc,

i suggested flattening the ends of the 22# spring when we first got them, I found I didn't have to. I simply push the slide on using the edge of a table or counter, doing this gives me just enough pressure get the slide to pop back over the rails.

I'm doing the same as barnett3006 at the moment, intermittently. I'm also finding that the longer the spring is actually installed in the gun, the less force I have to use to reassemble. I may end up grinding though, just to get the "effortless" feel of the field stripping back.
