The FFL just called and broke my heart. Centerfire is out of the laminated M-44s. Fortunately I will be able to console myself when the PA-63 gets here. I'll have some questions. Later Don

Well guys, if all goes well and my camera works, I will try to get some photos of mt MN M44 today! I saw where "dolang1" called and Centerfire was out of the M44s. I called last Thursday to get another one myself and they said they were out of all M44s. They sure had a good price and sold out quickly. I am still impressed with mine......no rework stamps on the action, but I did find a rework stamp on the stock where they added the "toe" piece at the bottom of the buttstock. I was wondering when this was added since the stock does not have any sanding anywhere except at the "toe" where the hardwood piece was added. If this stock rework stamp had not been added, I think it was new and never fired?????
Anyway, I ordered another rifle; a RC German K98k from Empire Arms. I paid a little more than IO or Classic, but it is in nice condition with a mint bore! I will psot some photos of this one too. It is a code 337 (Gustloff Werke) and made in 1940. It is a mis-match of course, but everything is period correct.
OK, here are the photos:
First is the Mosin Nagant M44 with laminated stock. This is a real beauty!

Here is a close up of the markings on the receiver:

Here is the Gustloff Werke RC Mauser K98k. I did strip the Shellac finish off the stock, apply BLO, and finally a coating of Tom's 1/3 Military Stock Wax. This was is great and does not give a high sheen, but a military type finish.

thanks for the pix
and looks like you got a pair of nice looking rifles I have a repair on my M 38 up above the first band it looks like to me they ran out of wood when they made the laminate and then turned the stock after it was glued on

Norm,
That is what the hardwood piece appears to me to. The MN actually looks like it has never been refurbished or fired after the initial test firing. I have never been a big fan of the MN, but I thought the M44 would go great with my 1942 91/30 rifle, and now I am sold on the MN as a great rifle. They may not be the most beautiful, but they are definetly effective.
Now the Mauser K98k is the Ferrari of bolt actions to me......great handling, looks great, shoot great, and SEXY to boot.
I have one K98k that is all matching, a "byf 43" in 95% condition, but I don't shoot that one. The RC rifles do look good and shoot good so I can shoot them without worrying about breaking a part and losing $$$$$, LOL. I am going to try and find another RC mauser very soon as a backup to the Gustloff Werke. I think I have a line on one in as good a condition as this one and will call tomorrow to see if still available. I will keep you guys posted!

Well guys, I did it again.....I bought another K98k rifle. This is a 1942 "CE" code (J.P. Sauer) that is supposed to be in as good of condition as the Gustloff. This one has the laminated stock, cupped buttplate, etc. The stock is original matching to the barreled receiver (so they say, but I think it is renumbered by the Russians). As soon as I receive it, get the Russian Shellac cleaned off it, I will post some photos if it. This was all i needed was another long gun. I have no room for these but I can't help myself!

What do you use to remove the shelac fromk a stock? I understand denatured alcohol will do the trick with some elbow grease. I really want to refinish (MN fans are cringing now) my 91/30. I shoots like a dream (except with this silly scope I need to figure out) and I want it to look as good as it functions. Now it looks good but is just an old rifle.
Thanks

carguy,
I used Denatured Alcohol and it worked wonders! The Shellac finish was thinner than I expected so there really was no "elbow grease" required to remove. I poured some DA in a pan, cut up a number of old shirts into sections, dipped the cloth in the alcohol and started wiping the Shellac off (use rubber gloves). As the cloth started loading with the Shellac, i got a new piece and kept going. I would wipe small sections at a time and after wiping with the wet cloth, I would wipe with a dry piece. You will be able to see where the old Shellac melted but was not wiped cleaned as it turns a "whitish" color. Go over this area again until no white coloration appears. Then I used some Bronze Wool (steel wool will work fine) in 0000, dipped in the alcohol and rubbed onto the stock. The Bronze Wool would soak up more Shellac, and I would dry the clean area. After I thought I had it all off, I used some dry Bronze wool to smooth up the wood. After letting the stock dry real good, I started rubbing in BLO. I put 3 coats of BLO and after it dried overnight, I put 2 coats of Tom's Military Gunstock Wax (a formulation of 1/3 BLO, 1/3 Beeswax, and 1/3 Turpentine). This finish leaves a nice smooth military dull sheen to the stock. It took me about 1 hour to strip the stock. The DA works FAST!
I talked to my wife a little earlier this evening and she said a package came by UPS today, but required a signature. It appears it will be Thursday before she can pickup at the UPS store. This is the other German K98k I ordered from Classic Arms YESTERDAY! Great delivery time. I just wish I was home to get the rifle and start the cleaning process, LOL! I hope this "CE" (J.P. Sauer) K98k will look as good as the Gustloff.
Hey Norm, yea the 1940 Gustloff has a Laminated stock with the Flat Buttplate and it is period correct. The 1942 Sauer rifle has a laminated stock but with the cupped Buttplate. I will try to post some photos of the Sauer this weekend. I will post some "before" and "after" photos.

[OK Carguy I wont cringe if you dont.. I got an old 44 with a beat-up stock(because of Papabears wood advise
) just to experiment. once I stated i discovered not only was it beat up but the fore pieces both had cracks in the wood. so now I had a choice get a plastic stock or play and make my own sporter. that is the option I took. even found an old muzzle brake I dont have the faintest idea where I got it but it has found a home now. before and after pics

anjdrifter,
That's pretty darn cool! I know a lot of folks cringe at the thought of sporterizing a historic military rifle, but I think your MN looks great!
