Why thanks PB.
I have the strange hobby of collecting, cataloging, and testing 9x18 ammunition. I don't think anyone else really collects this caliber; at least in my years of posting nobody has contacted me to talk about their collection. Well, maybe Slim Tim on the Makarov forum, but he just buys everything he can get his hands on, stuffs it in his garage, and he doesn't know what all he has. BTW he's a totally great guy who is a real resource.
My ammo collection probably started in March 1970 when I emptied out my luggage in Ft Lewis and found out I had inadvertently brought back about 100 M-60 and M-16 rounds. I still have a bunch of them but somebody picked out and stole the tracers years ago.

I was able to return that Russian ammo, the guy at the store told me that 105gr should be OK in the PA-63, whoever told me otherwise doesn't know...typical gun store "expert".
He also told me no one sells this ammo anymore, I found 3 places locally that sell it. A bit pricey though, $15 for 50rds of Winchester.

mike, online is definitely the place to buy 9x18. Or if there are local gun shows you may find a score. I have never seen a gun store sell 9x18 as cheap as you can get it over the internet.
Google "9x18" with a cup of coffee someday. There are a lot of quality vendors.

Yes, it's no doubt cheaper online. Especially if you order in bulk to make it worth the shipping costs. I've been checking most of the sites mentioned, and it's about $8 and up for a box of 50. I usually look for milsurp 7.62x54r at the gun shows, now I'll be looking for 9x18 as well. Thanks again. Even though I have only a "cousin" to the P-64, everyone here has been very helpful to my seemingly endless questions!

Ah, you search for 7.62x54r. So you ain't no rookie.

Yes, endlessly. I have a bit more than 2000 rds of surplus, Bulgarian 1950's and Bosnian (Igman) 2002. I try to get at least one can at each local gun show.

... I have a bit more than 15,000 rounds of 9x18 ...
That's not bragging; it's the sign of the symptom my wife is spraying for around the house.

9x18 surplus ammo
I e-mailed makarov.com about the scarsity of surplus ammo and got this response,
my sent message:
Hello,
>
> I figured you guys would be the ones to know this info. I've been doing
some research, looking for surplus 9x18 ammo, only to find that aside from 3 or
4 16rnd boxes scattered around, no one has ever seen "spam cans" full of the
stuff like all the other soviet ammo, I'm sure they made them. My question is
Where are all the spam cans full of 9x18? are there restrictions or do we have
to wait for someone to "discover" them, much like the surplus 7.62 nagant that
SOG and others are selling now.

Thanks for any info,
Trent
Their response:
Alot of it was imported years ago, but much of the Russian military
stuff is non importable to the USA, either because it has a steel core,
or solid steel jacket thicker than whatever the limit is for it being
considered "Armor Piercing" Also much of it was sold off to other
countries that issue 9x18M caliber weapons.
-George
My take:
He makes a good argument, but As I researched further, there were dozens of 9x18 guns made in various countries, Czech republic, Poland, Bulgaria, China, bla bla bla, and many of them were duty weapons, sidearms and smg's so each country probably has a stockpile of their own ammo. while the stuff from Russia may not be permitted, I don't see that all the other stuff ever made has already been imported. So I guess we have to wait for some importer to "discover" a bunker in bulgaria full of the stuff at some point.
Hummm, that makes me think... I'm going to e-mail some importers and see If they know/ are willing to tell me anything. And I can perhaps put a bug in their ear (figuratively speaking) and they may start searching for some......
