SMC 918 questions

Post by redfestiva »

How rare is this pistol and how much do they sell for. They appear to be similar to the P-64 except for the magazine release is like a PPK. Can someone tell me the differences to the P-64? Do any of our forum members have one and can you give a report on one please?

Red;

I have one. The pistol has an aluminum frame and is slightly smaller than the P-64, as the attached photo shows.

Postives: it appears well made, and I haven't had problems with feeding, etc. It's the smallest 9x18 pistol ever imported and it's made for concealed carry.

Negatives: It kicks like a Marching Highlander. I can't hit a barn from the inside with it. I think that's a combination of the small sights and the fact that the grip is smaller, both in width and length, so it's hard to hold it well. I have had multiple others tell me that they have had the same problem with trying to aim the pistol, so if there are people who can post that they can shoot the thing still be aware that I'm not the only person who has trouble with it. But, for concealed carry where you don't plan on hitting 25-yard targets it probably serves well.

I bought mine for slightly less than $200, plus shipping and transfer fees, but because they are fairly rare the fair price is established by what you can find.

The first photo is the FEG and the second is the FEG compared to the P-64 where the FEG is on the bottom. I bought Dennis grips for both it and the pictured P-64.

redfestiva and nbender,

Thank for this interesting post, I didn't even know this pistol existed. I guess other than the P-64 and the Makarov, I have lost interest in other 9x18 pistols, as for collections, my main interest/addiction is in collecting , and the older S&W and Colts ie, 40's, 50's and 60's, but I did fall in love with the P-64 about 2 years ago and joined this board a few months later and now it is my "Home Board", which is addiction talk for where I attend my meetings........ ;D

Thank you both for bringing this to my attention and describing the SMC 918 and the wonderful pix's that nbender always has for us.

I have a SMC-918 which I recently bought on auction for $150 + $20 shipping. It was new in the box with 2 mags, cleaning rod, etc. First time with it at the range last week I fired 50 rounds of Slovakian PS Grand 95 gr FMJ. It was accurate and reliable but it does have some recoil! Mine is a definite keeper.

PS Grand is some hot stuff!! It makes a cz-82 sting you. I bet it really stings with the smc-918. I would be afraid to shoot to much of it with the aluminum frame.

The only other difference between the two that can be important - (and you can see it on nbender's photo with both SMC and P64 ) is that the P64 slide is profiled at the back so that the sharp bottom edge is up and away from the web of your shooting hand. I have SMC which is, in fact the smallest 9x18 pistol and after rather bruising shooting session that caused my hand to bleed I went to my gunsmith asking him to profile the back of the slide up - just like the P 64 but the cost would exceed the value of this pistol so I put it in the safe.
