Trigger spring replacement

Post by herk »

Several weeks ago, I ordered the 22# recoil spring and the 17# trigger spring from Wolff. As soon as I got the springs, I installed the recoil spring and that went pretty well after I flatten the new spring ends. I was a little intimidated by the trigger spring job so I procrastinated until tonight. I finally decided to go for it. I started with a standard run of the mill 1975 P-64.

First step- off with the grips. No problem there, I'd had the grips off before. Image
Now comes the good part- pushing out the clip pivot pin and I got to use my pin pusher bit for the first time and it was too short to push the pin all the way out (probably a good thing too, who knows where that spring might have gone) Image While containing the clip button and spring, I removed the pin fully without incident. Image What follows could not be photographed and yes, I could have used three hands to install the new spring. Between the pistol sliding around as I compressed the spring, to jiggling the clip release button to line up the holes, to pushing the pivot pin in, it was an adventure that went on far too long, but did end successfully with new springs and a fully functional pistol, I hope.

Next comes the new Wolff firing pin spring which also has me a bit intimidated. The pictures I've seen of the process leave too much to the imagination for me and all I can see is dark blurs of metal inside the slide. I'm going to have to do this one in daylight. My eyes need the light........

Trigger spring replacement

After changing the recoil spring and the trigger spring, I decided I'd better go to the range and see if this P-64 of mine would shoot. Well, I figured I would give it the acid test so I put 50 rounds of Wolf 95 gr. FMJ through with no failures to feed, but did have two failures to fire which did fire on the second tap. Function was flawless, double action and recoil were acceptable, magazine stayed in place, shots were all in the black and I only got a small blood blister on the inside top of my right thumb. After I finished firing I saw the sign which said "absolutely no Wolf steel-cased ammo or Blazer aluminum cases on the range." Sorry I won't shoot Wolf again. I did sweep up all my Wolf brass and put it in my pockets to be disposed of later. It also ate the Gold Dot 95gr. hollow points without hesitation. Next task replace the firing pin spring!
Norm, I did take your advice and downloaded the manual. The pictures were a little too dark to me, so I cut and pasted all the pictures to a .doc file and brightened them up so that I could see the detail. My thanks to the author for his efforts...
