Way OT: Shotgun Suggestions

Post by carguy »

My son and I recently joined a Gun Club and are looking to get into trap / sporting clay shooting. I do not currently own any shotguns (haven't in years) and would like some suggestions from you bunch of mavens as to what might be a good place to start. Budget will be limited as we will be buying 2 and just want to be sure to pick up good, durable guns. I love the old Remington 870 (not the new matte finish...makes me think they made it out of an old gas grill) and love the old Browning automatics. Someone also recently told me about a New England Firearm Pardner shotgun, supposed to be a knockoff of the 870. We will probably be looking to keep it under $500 for both so like I said budget is limited.

Now that's why I asked !!

I have no clue what anything is worth as far as shotguns go.

Suddenly Mossberg is at the top of my list.

I got my Maveric 88 12 guage at Walmart for 158.00. It is made by Mossberg, and you can interchange some parts with the 500 model.

Mossberg 500 or Rem 870 are great.

However, at the Trap Club my dad goes to, they frown on anything other than over/unders. Something about unseemly shells getting ejected all over the place. Not my kind of place...

do a search for Baikal shotguns on the auction sites. You can get the Baikal over/unders for around 250 - 300. I have not had a chance to shoot any of these guns but I have handled a few, they are more in the Russian Utilitarianism style of finishes but they seem to lock up/break open just as good as a Remington or Ruger O/U thats in the 1000 dollar range.

For a trap gun you probably want 28" barrels and Improved Cylinder chokes.
