Redesigned grips and replacement offer

Post by dmarschal »

Hi All!

I was able to solve this problem with Norm's help! Thank you again!!!

I redesigned my grips to be more durable. I've heard the backstrap cracking problem which has occured on some not precisely made guns. (There is 0.3 millimeter difference between the frame's two important points on those guns.)

The first change affected the backstrap. Here is a picture that shows the difference. The blue line is the old backstrap contour.

There is another change which I can not show on picture. I made the inside of the grips a bit wider so they will slide up easily.

More pictures to show the finished stocks. I think you can see the difference. They become wider (+1/8") than my original grips.

!!! Anyone who had difficulties mounting my grips, please let me know. (If the top edge stucked and you had to force to slide them to position) I'm ready to send a replacement set for you and for anyone want to change his/her existing 'Dennis' grips a better/safer one.

Have a nice day!
Dennis.

Are any of those grips in the pic for sale? I like the one in the background.

Denis:

This is a generous offer on your part ... I'm impressed!

I have two sets and one has cracked at the top of the backstrap. I like the thinner profile, and as long as the second set continues to work, I think that I'll keep it. I would love to get a set of the new design to replace the failed set, though. I'll follow up with an e-mail. Once again ... THANK YOU for the offer!

If you've ever taken the origional grips off a P-64, as most of us have, of course, you might have noticed that they seemed like they were stuck. That is because of the configuration of the mold in relationship to the frame.

The bevels built into the two components provides mechanical stabiltiy to the combination of the plastic grip to the steel grip frame, as demonstrated in the following images:

The frame is beveled inwardly to accomodate the 45 degree return on the grip.

The tension and integrity of this joint redistributes much of the energy that would otherwise impact the screw hole and the rest of the grip when the pistol is fired. This undercut relationship stabilizes in 4 directions, rather than the 3 directions that a standard rabbeted joint provides, and redistributes the impact of firing along a much longer joint face cut against the heaviest part of the grip.

It seems to me that this may be a critical factor in designing replacement grips for the P-64, and the lack of detailed fit in this area could be responsible for some of the grip failures reported.

If I'm not mistaken, Dennis' grips actually do have the undercut bevel that the originals have ...

Well, are they made in two pieces? I thought they were made in one piece and I was having trouble understanding how they could then be installed and removed without damaging them.

Yes, I had Dennis not glue them and they have worked out really well for me, and easier for me to get them off and on, just like the Zee grips.

Dennis, I agree with Saands, I appreciate the offer, but my grips have survived 2 or 3 hundred rounds and I'm going to keep them just like they are. If they break I'll order the fatboy set at that time. Later Don

Send Dennis an email requesting what you want, he'll tell you how much. Then you will have to use Paypal to pay him.

I like the glued grip, it just seems a little more solid to me. I don't like the 2 halves (of the originals) slipping around. I don't have a problem installing or removing them (took a few minutes the first time though).

stibnite,

None of my grips on the P-64 have ever slipped around while shooting or any other time including the origianl flat grips, thumbrest grips, Zee's grips or Dennis's grips. To each their own though. If your qrips are slipping around maybe they need tighting or maybe changing your grip, but what do I know, if the solid grips work for you then nuff said.

Papabear: I went with your suggestion and am getting my replacements in two pieces ... I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but I think that if there IS any play, it will be much easier to fix with the grips being in two pieces.
