Numrich Magazine Observations

Thought I’d share my experience with the magazines being sold by Numrich, having recently purchased two of ‘em. Unfortunately, now up to $40 each!

As noted in previous threads (see below), the feed lips are longer as compared to early P64 magazines. Loaded one of the Numrich mags with dummy rounds and chambered a round into my 1970:

• As previously noted by others, I was unable to pull the slide back and eject the chambered round.
• Same when testing in my 1971 P64.
• Inspecting closely, I could see the base of the case contacting the feed lips, preventing further movement rearward.

But as I messed around more, I found that I could eject the dummy round by pulling the slide more enthusiastically. Decided it wasn’t necessary to modify the feed lips, and took a magazine as-is to the range for live firing testing in the 1970. Worked perfectly.

And, now I think I understand why the base of spent cases ejected from my P64s are scored so much: hitting the feed lips pretty dang hard on the way out.

The two magazines I received aren’t as nicely finished as original mags:

1. A noticeable gap between the pinky rest and tube.
2. The edges of the cut outs in the center of the tube are relatively sharp.
3. On one of the magazines, the follower has kind of a dimple at the slide lock cut-out/fold, which likely occurred during the cutting/folding process. Also a few tiny pits on the follower surface.

But none of the above have affected functionality.

One more anecdote. The first P64 I purchased back in 2016, a 1968, came with two magazines. One of the magazines locked the slide up solid. Yup…it had the long feed lips. At the time, I didn't know there is a difference between early/later mags. The LGS I purchased the pistol from knocked down the feed lips for me, after which it worked fine in the 1968.

Nice review. I found something similar with my Femaru M37. It would not eject snap caps but with live fire it worked perfectly.

An update.

While shooting my P64 a few days ago, using a Numrich magazine, I experienced a failure to feed. Ten rounds later, the same type of failure to feed. Put the Numrich magazine aside, and continued shooting with an OEM magazine (no malfunctions).

The failure to feed occurred after 76 SAT rounds fired through the Numrich magazine.

Inspected the magazine when I got home: one feed lip is noticeably bent. And there are dents on the front and back side of the tube near the top. The dents on the back side are similar to those noted in this thread:

viewtopic.php?t=7475

The OP said the dents are occurring after about 100 rounds. Like the OP, my Numrich magazine is also becoming difficult to insert and remove.

None of my OEM magazines exhibit bent feed lips or dents in the tube, and all slide in and out easily.

Seems these aftermarket magazines (I'm assuming the magazine discussed in the thread above is also aftermarket) are only good for about 75-100 rounds. Perhaps a case of inadequate hardening?

My one Keep Shooting magazine has a little bit thinner/weaker metal. It tends to get the bumps in the front and back like others have mentioned. The lips feel a little more squishy but have not been an issue. I squeeze them back to the "right" spot when they feel like they have opened up too far every rare once in a while.

I immediately replaced the spring with a Wolff magazine spring as well as all of the original magazines I have. The original spring from the Keep Shooting magazine looked like garbage and nothing like the originals or the new Wolff springs.

I have had no issues with this magazine and have been using it for my dryfire practice and drills exclusively trying to get it to fail but it never has. That's why it is loaded with the blue snap caps right now.

I might buy another one since the bumps issue doesn't seem to be getting any worse with time. It's bot a big deal IMHO.

All of my P64's are the later version so I can't comment on how it might work on those earlier type P64's. I've only once ever had a magazine issue and that was with the original magazine. I think I had the grip screw too tight and the magazine was actually shoved a tad bit too high. The grips held it too high instead of coming back down a schoosh to rest in the right position right on the magazine release.
