New Acquisition...SKS...New Pics w/minor mods!

Post by garry »

Hello , I took the SKS out yesterday and tried the new scope setup . I did not have it as tight as i should have(for fear of overtightening and stripping the screws). It shot loose after 4 shots. I tightened it up really tight and then managed to shoot within a foot of the target at 100 yards. Nothing to write home about except that i did not try to adjust it. Next time i go shoot it i will sight it in better. I ran out of daylight and the mosquitos drove us away at dark. My friend had several bites all over him, I had NONE. I must have tasted like Crap, i guess. lol
(back to the poop thing again, Right Carguy?)
I did get to sight in my new 3-9x40 scope from Cummins tool and WOW what a great deal that is at $29.99 !!! I have it on one of my two Marlin 60 .22 rifles. We set up clay targets on the berm in bowling pin configuration and the game was to shoot at them until you missed and keep score of who gets the most out of ten. My Friend was using his Ruger MK ll w/ red dot scope and he sighted it in and was hitting the clays really well at 50 yards. I had to hold over on the target about an inch.
Anyways , I just wanted to share that the SKS mount is a pretty kewl deal and held really well after i tightened it up. G

YES
but the bolt and spring slamming to the back of the receiver , receiver covers can't handle (on cover mounts )
it, they may tight when you start off but loosen as day goes on ,then if you take it off to clean the gun it will be way off zero.
sorry

Thanks Norm ! hmmm... where have I heard that before? hahaha
Yep i see why that scope mount would be better. This one that i have is OK for now. It also has the see thru channel for using iron sights( luckily).
It was the only style the guy had, so I looked it over and had already read some comments about it ,so i went for it. So far I am well please . After I re-tightened it , It held really well BUT, I am sure it will eventually shoot loose again due to the design. I may drill out some small "dimples" for the set screws on the base and I think that will allow me to "lock" it on better and of course i will use some Locktite thread locker on it . I will see how long it takes to shoot loose this time. Originally , I hadn't tightened it down nearly enough but i really torqued the screws down tight this time . I was afraid of snapping the set screws off, so, i went cautiously.I am sure you understand why? hahaha. Anyways , I will definitely get that other type of Mount for my other SKS ! Thanks Again Man, G

New Pics!!!

I added a rubber bumper pad on the butt plate to "lengthen" it a little (the recoil was never a problem) and a ventilated "Cheese Grater" hand guard.

I'm getting pretty handy with a dremmel and a punch...I'm loving this!!! ::)

very nice Carguy,

my SKS paratrooper and both Maadi AK's have the "cheese grater" vented gas tube. Where did you find one? I must have bought mine 10 years ago....and I haven't seen any lately.

Ebay listed it but I screwed ebay and emailed the seller after the auction ended and sent him $8.00 plus shipping.

There were several new and used. I bought mine new.

I really like the look! I just have to be very mindful of how fast it gets hot at that end! :'(

What a fun gun the sks is. ;D
