As many of you guys have been a dad longer than I, how old were your children when you started their education in firearms? Shooting etc?

My daughter is nine. I got her a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas and she loves it. She is a little Annie Oakley with it!

She shoots close groups at 25 yards and is getting better at 50 yards. We go to the gun club almost every weekend.

With the BB gun she is learning safety, respect, and care for firearms.

I will move her up to a .22 single shot rifle for her tenth birthday.

That will also be one of this year's project guns for me

Well, I probably haven been a dad longer than you, but I've already started the education part. My daughters are 5 and 3 years old. My oldest will be 6 on St. Patrick's Day, and my youngest will be 4 on June 10th. They both know we've got guns, and know they are dangerous. I often go over 2 basic rules with them (they are young).

If you see a gun:

STOP

DONT TOUCH IT, and DONT LET ANYONE ELSE.

LEAVE THE ROOM the gun is in.

Go tell an adult. (Go get daddy to tell him he left his gun out.)

This is the same as the basic "Eddie the Eagle" safety program offered by the NRA. My oldest has already started asking about shooting, and I've told her when she gets older I'd be very happy to take her (and her sister). I'd also like some feedback from our guys out there with children and grandchildren that they have taught. Excellent thread michaelap!! Good idea on this one!!

I started My boys out when the oldest was10 and the youngest 6. I couldnt ask for better kids. That is the honest truth.

At age 6 ? shooting? what did you begin with? I ask because my mind is filled with all the great things my daughter and I can do as she grows up but she is my first and I'm just afraid of rushing things-know what I mean?

I know you directed your question at fathers (as I am not) but I was about 2 when I started shooting my dads 22 revolver and I was about 4 when I started shooting a 9mm (no joke, I just confirmed this with my dad). I remember one time when I was about 5 my dad let me shoot his T/C Contender with a .410 barrel, I shot about 2 rounds when my hands started to hurt to much to shoot anymore. I got my very own 22 rifle when I was about 8 from my great-grandfather, that Stevens 22 rifle is now going to be my 6 year old brothers rifle in another year or so. My brother is also learning to shoot with the 22 revolver and with a 9mm, I have a home video of my dad helping my 2 youngest sisters and my brother (about 10, 8 and 5 at the time) shoot a 50 cal muzzle loader (drastically reduced loads of course) that my dad got for Christmas from all of us.

When the time comes, I will be teaching my kids to shoot in the same manner and at the same ages.

I started my son at 7. I got him a Rossi .22/.410 matched pair. The stock is about like a BB gun and it has a manual safety,that's good to get him in the habit of using a safety. I paid $99 for it at Dick's Sporting goods.
