Shot another P64 for the first time today, a 1976 model. Shot well. Still has the original springs as far as I can tell. Tried double action shot at first, stiff as usual, and the next single action shot came off real easy, almost too easy. When fired from single action mode this was not that much of an issue. Gun was accurate, but that single action shot, just after the double action shot, would go off real wild sometimes. Gun behaved well enough, a few times the slide failed to fully go into battery after a shot, by about a 1/4 inch or less really. Can't find any burrs. Recoil spring is not in backwards. Did not have to use excessive force to free up slide. Would a heavier recoil spring help? (20# vs. 22#???). Would any spring change help tame that single action shot just after a double action shot?
Shot S/B FMJ and Silver Bear FMJ. Had a dud in the box of Silver Bear, would not go off after 3 or 4 attempts.

Somebody may have swapped out your hammer spring to one of the lighter PPK springs. You may want to try putting a Wolf spring in there.

Its possible that the pistol was not cleaned, lubed and oiled, that would explain the failure to properly return to battery. So many folks see the storage oil on the pistole's and think they are good to go not knowing that the pistol needs to be field striped cleaned and lubed prior to shooting for guarantied function. I learned this the hard way when I bought my first P-64 Pistol, Norm and Papabear put me straight on that issue right away, never had a problem since.

Same thing happened to me. A REAL good cleaning & now they shoot great. I used brake spray cleaner on mine, then re-lubed & lightly greased the rails. Now I trust my life on it.

Oh, it was cleaned pretty good and lubed correctly before I took it out to the range. I think it is a spring issue.

Frym, I bought the heaviest recoil spring Wolff makes for the P-64, if memory serves me it was the twenty-two pound spring, tamed down the recoil very nicely and the slide never fails to return to battery.
