Woman, 81, Shoots Homeless 'Washer'

MOBILE, Ala. - An 81-year-old woman shot a homeless man after finding him washing his clothes in her laundry room, police said. Ethel Sanders told police she heard noises in her laundry room Monday morning, so she grabbed her handgun and found a man standing in his underwear near the washing machine, police spokesman Officer Eric Gallichant told the Press-Register.

Sanders, who normally uses a walker, shot the man when he came at her, Gallichant said. She was knocked to the ground by the force of the gun and the man grabbed it from her, Gallichant said. The man pointed the gun at Sanders, took his clothes from the washing machine and fled, Gallichant said.

Officers quickly found the nearly naked suspect at a nearby community center. He had been struck by a bullet that went through his leg to his stomach. He was expected to survive, and will be charged with first-degree burglary when he is released from the hospital, police said.

Sanders told the newspaper she bought the pistol about four years ago to protect herself because she lives alone, but had never fired it before.

"Whenever I hear a noise, I just go grab my gun," she said.

I think Granny should have stayed hidden and quiet, let the man leave, and then called the police and let them deal with him. I admire her intestinal fortitude, but she hadn't even learned how to use the handgun properly, and it nearly got her killed. Not wise.

I don't know if holing up was an option...it sounded like she didn't know what was going on back there. Our laundry room is behind our garage...if someone was out there, we wouldn't know unless one of us actually got in a position either in the garage or out on the deck to look in...either way, not much cover or opportunity for stealth.

It was a close shave for granny, though. I hope some good samaritan in the area shows the ol' bird how to use her hand cannon

Bless her heart ! It is so unfortunate that some animals prey on the old. As a kid I learned to respect my Elders. I don't agree with schools removing the Bible from the curicculum.(haha mispelled) We are living among a society that has been let loose and allowed to turn wild. Some among us refuse to straighten things out and teach their young the RIGHT and Proper way to act. As we all grow older , we are starting to see how removing the Basic fundamentals of the Bible has come back to bite us all. As we age , we need to prepare ourselves against these threats. They will happen more frequently as the children start to rule without the proper wisdom and knowlege that is needed to make decisions for the masses. Jungle Law is incompatable with Civilized society. Mobs WILL rule our streets eventually. This Lady was Incredibly LUCKY this time. A gun in the hand is better than a Cop on the phone. The Police cannot be everywhere at once. As we are starting to get outnumbered by gangsters and thugs, we better get ready for a whole new sick wave of violence. Here in KC we had an Old nun get raped and robbed then beaten to death and she was 94yrs old. That shows what kind of sick animal is running loose on our streets. He got caught because he was bragging about it to friends. At least some folks will not stand for this and one of them turned him in. All is not lost!
