Safety stiff as hell - fixed.

Post by jdeereman »

I recently picked up a p64 for a decently low price. I've got about $180 in it after shipping and FFL. I love the size.... (Also i replaced the the hammer spring with Wolf 25816 but haven't had a chance to shoot it yet).

My question is the safety is stiff as hell. It takes all I got in my fingers, usually both hand in an odd position to get it off. I've had to use a screwdriver with a towel over it to push it off even. That won't work good in a SD situation. Is there something wrong? Something that can be done to modify this? Or am I just a weakling?

Thanks so much in advance!

Thanks to M2 Carbine from Glocktalk for removal instructions.

To pull the thumb safety out the firing pin has to be pushed forward. The firing pin acts to hold the safety in the slide.

This is a three hand job.

Below the firing pin is a slot in the slide where you can see the firing pin and spring.
With a little screw driver you can push and hold the firing pin forward.
If you can get a small strong clamp on the front of the firing pin to hold it forward, it will free up a hand from having to hold the firing pin forward as you remove the safety and make the job a lot easier.

With the firing pin forward the safety can be pulled/worked straight out of the slide. The spring and plunger will try to push the safety at an angle making it a little difficult removing and replacing the safety.

Now check the free movement of the s&p and free it up as necessary.

Watch that the firing pin/spring and safety plunger/spring don't fly across the room and get lost. I'd guess they would be impossible to replace.

To replace the safety you have to have the firing pin forward and the safety s&p compressed as you work the safety back into the slide and over the plunger/spring.
Cussing may be called for.
I disassembled, inspected, lubed, and re-assembled and it worked great. I didn't even have to do any sanding or anything. Just a good lube job!

Thanks a million. I'll give that a try and report back!

I don't know a whole lot about these things...

How would I go about removing that safety to work it over?
