Another P83 Decocker with trouble.
Another P83 Decocker with trouble.
I'm having a similar problem, perhaps the same problem. I just got a P83 from JG.
Open and close the action, trigger is rear, hammer is cocked.
Push the hammer drop safety/ decocker, it will not move.
Push with a tool, such as a rubber mallet, it will move and the hammer will lower, but the trigger stays to the rear. (This aspect of the trigger seems to be normal for this model, if quite weird, at least according to youtube.)
Move the safety from safe to fire, trigger pops forward into the double action position.
I'm concerned, because while the decocker/safety does seem to work, the amount of force required is excessive.

Re: Another P83 Decocker with trouble.
Have you THOROUGHLY cleaned all.the cosmoline out of it? The decocker / safety barrels are notorious for getting dried cosmo into all the really tiny spaces and making them extremely difficult to work. Try field stripping the pistol and soaking it in mineral spirits overnight. Better yet, learn how to strip down the slide and soak all the parts in mineral spirits and then scrub snot out of 'em, properly lube it up and try again. Just make sure you take the grips.off before soaking.

Re: Another P83 Decocker with trouble.
I took the slide apart, and cleaned it with a Qtip. Prob should have used solvent.... Don't want to do it again as that captured pin was a nightmare to get back in place.
I might soak the frame, if you think it will help. The slide safet level moves pretty well when it's not on the gun, so I'm 'pretty sure' the problem is below that.

Re: Another P83 Decocker with trouble.
Soak them both overnight and see what that does. And you can do it without detail stripping them as the solvent should get in there but a detail strip and scrubbing with a toothbrush / nylon cleaning brush is always better on guns stored with cosmo.
And then if that does not solve the problem then you look elsewhere but you still have a nice clean gun.

Re: Another P83 Decocker with trouble.
Lacking any minreal spirits, I am soaking it in WD-40, and it's helping a fair amount. I think I need to strip down the frame, which I'm not looking forward to..... Going to go hunt for the disassembly instructions.
Re: Another P83 Decocker with trouble.
find mineral spirits. WD is a lub that will dry and crust, kinda like cosmo. Turpintine will work or paint thinner. They will work correctly and disolve the cosmo instead of reanimating the cosmo so it can dry again.

Re: Another P83 Decocker with trouble.
KK, Got it in a mineral spirit bath as we speak.
Re: Another P83 Decocker with trouble.
Hey.... When I'm done, how do I get the mineral spirits off? Any trick to that?
Re: Another P83 Decocker with trouble.
You can rinse in very hot water and dry it and then lube it. And let us know how it works out.

Re: Another P83 Decocker with trouble.
No joy as yet. I gave it 12 hours in the bath, pulled it, washed it, oiled it, and I'm still letting the oil sink in, but it looks like the decocker is as stiff as ever. Feels almost like the disconnector's fulcrum can't ever get oil, but there's enough oil in there that it should.
Maybe I'll ship it back to jg.

Re: Another P83 Decocker with trouble.
That is certainly an option. Other option is disassembly and see what condotion the safety barrel internals are in. Sorry that did not work but at least you have eliminated dried cosmo as the reason.

Re: Another P83 Decocker with trouble.
Can you cam back the hammer then use the decocker, is it any better?

Re: Another P83 Decocker with trouble.
Yes, if you pull the hammer, the decocker works... Also if you set it to safe and rack the action, it decocks. One can also pull the slide back slightly and set the decocker and push the slide forward.
If I were in a Mad Max world, I'm sure that would be enough, but as it is I dislike having buying something which doesn't fully function.

Re: Another P83 Decocker with trouble.
I am wondering if the safety detent is not fully retracting and getting in the way?
