A poll of sorts...

A question for everybody, I think the answers will be interesting... WHY?

Specifically, why did you choose to own a P-64? What is its primary purpose? Concealed carry? Range toy? Why did you choose it- for whatever purpose you have it- over other options? What do YOU find to be the pros and cons of it for your purpose?

Nostalgia of having another 9x18 (already have a Bulgy, P83 x 2, PA-63). Could carry it in pocket but SA trigger too light for my liking. So now a range toy.

A few reasons, it is similar to my 1950's Walther PP that I use for CC, it compliments the PP and war time P38 I own, inexpensive but highly reliable handgun and lastly a hair more powerful than my PP for CC.
Or to put it another way, I just like it...

I just got my first Polish P64 from Classic Firearms. It is nearly brand new and I have already loved on it with cleaning, Wolff springs and a Bore Store. I bought it because it is a piece of history, all steel, adds to my commie gun collection, and it is just plain cool. Have to admit the video reviews on YouTube make one want to buy one. No desire to conceal carry with a P64 or Mak, rather the desire to collect and shoot firearms that have history to them.

Gee... my neighbor was having problems pulling the slide. I looked and wondered what it was. He wanted to know it I wanted for 75.00. Then I started researching it and am fascinated of its history.
I am looking for others, so if anyone is looking to downside, please let me know.
Oh yeah, i am using it for my EDC.

For me it was a matter of it being wintertime. My normal EDC is an HK P7 that I carry between 7 and 8 O'clock (Lefty). For heavy coat season, I wanted something to carry in the wallet pocket of my coat... a little quicker to get to than the HK would be under the jacket. Size, weight, and hard DA trigger all fit the bill for me, as does the price... and even with the very minor "drop safe" concern I'm okay pocket carrying this with a chambered round and safety off. (Again, Lefty problems).

I suppose the main reason I bought a P-64 is because I have a weakness for guns, especially for inexpensive military arms. If the P-64 were made and offered for sale commercially today it would cost twice as much as the almost new ones are going for so they are a bargain. I replaced the springs in mine and shoot it occasionally and would carry it if I ever decide that I need to.

J.D., I recommend putting the safety on when carried with a round chambered, if the hammer gets hit it will go bang with the safety off.

Perry, I'm respectfully disagreeing. At least in the case of my pistol, as I cannot speak for others, and I have tested with and experimented with this extensively with my pistol... with the safety off, there is very distinctly a hammer block mechanism that prevents the hammer from making contact with the firing pin when the hammer is in the down position- even with a direct impact to the hammer. It requires the hammer to fall from the fully cocked position to disengage this block, so it has to be either cycled completely in DA mode or fully cocked and fired to disengage the block.

I like military surplus firearms in general, the p64 is a good, solid, reliable, inexpensive gun for CCW. I had a SCCY cpx2 as my EDC, it wasn't as reliable as I'd like. The p64 is almost exactly the same size and weight, and has a reputation for great reliability. It's also the same price as a new SCCY at my local gun store. Also, I have a liking for external hammer guns.

Foxtail I was interested in the SCCY a few years ago.

But after following the SCCY forum for many months there appeared to be reoccurring problems with pins backing out along with other things.

It was a crap shoot, you could get a "good" one and never have problems , if you got a "bad" one you were in for a a long road of sending it back and forth to Florida for repairs, in many cases for the same problems.

So i finally crossed that one off my list.

My apologies J.D.. I certainly do not know much about the P-64. Out of habit I could not carry mine off safe with the hammer down and a loaded chamber, it would worry me until I put the safety on. I shoot left handed normally and it would suit better not to have to mess with the safety because it is on the wrong side for me. I usually shoot the P-64 right handed because of that. I could carry with an empty chamber and rack the slide if I needed to shoot. I actually do not carry so all this is moot.

I bought mine because I wanted a smalled 9x18 to carry than my CZ-82, the only thing I did stupid was sold my PA-63 to finance my P-64. DOH!!! Now I am meekly looking for another PA-63, never realized I would miss it this much. Love the P-64 for all it's strengths, like it disappears anywhere I choose to wear it and it is solid and ALWAYS fuctions. And I carry mine quite a lot except in winter as it can get quite cold and a lot of people around here wear Carhart gear which is some pretty tough stuff to punch through. Other wise just love the feel and it is, or was, an inexpensive MilSurp which I am nuts for. Just like my CZ-82.

Curly1, My SCCY had several problems needing warranty work in the first 300 or so rounds, including lots of failure to extract fired rounds. Their customer service is great, but I'd rather not have the gun NEED any customer service. Eventually the gun was running fine, but I never fully trusted it after the recurring issues. I'm very happy with the P64 now that I've replaced the hammer spring.
