On the highroad forum (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=628207) there is a thread about getting a NRA life membership for $300. It boils down to finding a lifetime member to be the sponsor, getting his/hers/its name/membership number/zip code, and calling NRA with that info and a credit card. AFAIK, any lifetime member can be your sponsor. In fact, if you can't find a victim, pm me.
