Just purchased a p64, but can't figure how to lock the slide back??? for cleaning.

put an empty mag in then pull the slide back then take out the mag

Welcome aboard.

Put an empty mag in and the slide will remain back when you rack it. To close it when you are through, remove the mag and pull back a little on the slide. The slide lock will disengage and you can let the slide return slowly. Do not release your grip until it is in place.

Danged Norm beat me again! ;D

It's simplier to just remove the slide off the frame for cleaning

That's how I do it...

I have another problem. When I remove the slide for cleaning, I somehow disengaged the trigger mechanism. I'm new to this gun and guns in general, but I've spent hours attempting to hold my P-64 upside down (this re-engages the trigger), but the slide always pushes the "thing that moves" back down. I'm sure this info is on this website, but most instructions are for full disassembly and require q-tips and ice picks. How am I supposed to clean my new hot little gun without this problem! -thanks

First off, thanks all for the welcome. I would also like to thank Norm and his excellent photos and advice about the trigger return spring. That sucker had me confused for over a month (school nailed me down too), but today I finally figured it out! Point me to the firing range and this day will be good.

Leave it to Norm to provide a happy ending...

Here is how to field strip your P-64.
1. Remove the magazine.
2. Check that the chamber is empty.
3. Pull down the trigger guard and be sure that it remains down.
4. Pull the slide ALL the way back and lift it up at the back end so as to clear the frame.
5. Ease the slide forward off of the barrel.
6. Return the trigger guard to its normal position.
7. Remove the recoil spring.
8. Remove the grips if you want to.
9. Your gun is now cocked and the safety is dis-engaged. DO NOT PULL THE TRIGGER WITHOUT FOLLOWING THE NEXT STEP!
10. To lower the hammer, pinch the left side of the frame and the trigger bar on the right side of the frame between the thumb and fore finger of your weak hand. Then place the thumb of your other hand on the hammer, so as to control its forward movement, and your index finger on the trigger. Press trigger and ease the hammer forward.
11. To reassemble, replace the recoil spring (smaller end goes on the barrel first), pull down the trigger guard, cock the hammer, seat the forward end of the recoil spring in the front of the slide and pull the slide ALL the way back and then push down the rear of the slide onto the frame and ease it forward. Then return the trigger guard to its normal position.

PULLING THE TRIGGER WITH THE SLIDE OFF CAN DISCONNECT THE TRIGGER BAR FROM THE TRIGGER, unless you hold it in place as described above (#10).

The thing that moves up and down is the disconnecter. This is a safety device which prevents the gun from firing if the slide is not all the way forward, referred to as being in battery. It SHOULD be spring loaded to remain in the UP position unless pushed down by you or by the slide.
