After looking at these guns for a long time and reading the postings here I took the plunge and had my dealer order me a P64. Got a great looking gun a '76 that appeared to be unfired with the flat panel grips. Took it to the range yesterday and it shoots fine with wolf, pmc and my reduced Mak handloads. The trigger has the typical really hard DA pull (no surprise) but also the SA has a lot of creep as well. Any advice to cure this? I've also this am ordered both the replacement hammer & recoil springs, but still think I might be looking at a trigger job.

I know this sounds crazy, but mine was the same. I thought it was clean, but after talking to papabear & Norm, I soaked it in breakfree then carb cleaner, then oiled and greased were need. Now it is a dream to shoot. Let off on SA is crisp & the DA is like a revolver. They look like new inside, but there is a lot of gunk inside the spring area.

I'd think that 4 a 60's-70's military surplus you have 2 expect creep n lengthy travel. Ya gettin' 4 all practical purposes a new &/or not broken in semi-auto 4 under 2 c-notes.

Clean it really well, and re-lube with good gun oil. Then shoot a couple of boxes of FMJ through it.

OK guys--time to show my ignorance--What exactly is a "creepy" trigger?? One that has a lot of travel before the trigger actually engages and starts moving the hammer? Or one that takes a long time after engaging to actually trip the hammer? Or ???

OK unload n pull the hammer back 2 lock. Take the return spring slack out n as slow as ya can go ease back on the trigger. How many times can ya feel it stop n grab b4 the hammer falls? I can get 3 on mine n dats da creep. Also known as a gritty trigger coz it ain't smooth but will over use get better. Even though that'll get better ya never gonna be able 2 do much 'bout the length of the trigger travel. This sidearm wasn't designed 2 be sold on the open market 4 punchin' holes in paper. Get ya hands on a 15yr or older S&W revolver & feel the difference. For that matter try the wsame thing on an old SW 5906 9mm. Not quite as good as a revolver but beats the dawg outa da 64. However used 17 yr old 5906 will go from $300-400 so it's all relative........

That sounds like something I solved by cleaning the cosmo out of the springs..

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll try the cleaning and lube method when the new springs arrive and go from there. On my Makarov I did a little filing and stone work on the hammer and it worked out great. That will be the next option if the trigger pull doesnt improve. Has anyone done this to a p64?
