How many rounds do you keep your mag

I was keeping 5 rounds in my mag and 1 in the chamber for reasons of maintaing good spring strength. I decided to keep 6 in the mag now to have that extra round capability. I guess I can just pull the springs out in a month and remeasure the total un-sprung length and see how much of a difference.
How many do you all keep in the mag?

TTH,
For the one I carry, 6 in the magazine, [no photo's] and one in the tube and my spare mag [6rds] and I rotate the mags every 3-4 weeks, just a old habit of mine.

the rest I keep empty,

Magazine springs don't lose their elasticity by staying compressed....they only wear out (over a VERY long time) from losts and lots of compression/decompression.
There are many instances of old guns (mostly military "souvineers") having been left loaded for 50+ years and the mag springs work perfectly.
Peace,
D.

That's good to know.... I wasn't sure about that one.... I know that the mags we used in our M-16a2 in the corp would loose some of their strength after awhile but wasn't sure what to think about the smaller springs. I will start leaving 6 in there cause I agree that they should be fine plus I like having 7 total rounds instead.

Same here. Six in the mag, one in the tube & six in the spare mag. If thirteen don't do the job, I'll sell the gun to the BG

right along with the rest--with rimless rounds I fill 'em up, with one in the chamber. With semi-rimmed I sometimes carry with one short in the mag...

(duggi60) You carry (2) P64's on you? I think having 7rounds is good enough for me... The way I look at it if I have to explain that I had enough time to reload then I am probably going to prison anyway for an un-justified shooting. I have an attorney's biz card on me so if it actually happens I can make my phone call when I'm being questioned, I'm sure I won't be in the right state of mind at that moment and don't want to incriminate myself. I was carrying 6 rounds but now after hearing alot of you guys I now chamber 1 and mag 6.

Back up carry is very common among LEOs. Why not civilians? If you carry one pistol it is a good idea to carry an extra magazine in case you do need more ammo or your magazine malfunctions. Two pistol carry is even better because you don't have to reload and you're covered in case one pistol malfunctions. You're a leather guy. Are you familiar with The New York Reload holster made by Chick Gaylord? It is still made by Bell-Charter Oak. It is a dual belt holster carried at the back. Pretty neat. Two pistols in a shoulder rig works well, too- distributes the weight better and is more comfortable than a pistol on one side and two mags on the other.

Where are most of you carrying your spare mag? Pocket?, belt mag holder?. I wonder if people be interested in an inside waistband holster that would hold the pistol and a spare mag?

Depends on what I am wearing, but this time of year usually in a pocket, but I also use a nylon pouch for my 4 1/2" folded knife, works great for me. In WWI and WWII the military issused the Government Model .45acp to it troops with three mags, one in the .45 and two in a mag pouch, of course we are not in a declared war, but the way things are looking, I might start carring two extra mags.
