Nick of time...just in today from SOG.

I started noticing that P-64s were getting hard to find through the usual suppliers.
So I checked SOG for availability last week figuring that if I ever wanted another one at a good price it was now or never. But, OMG...the website indicated out of stock! I was too late.
For S&Gs, I checked back a few times during the day and amazingly, it said "IN STOCK"
I pulled the trigger and ordered one and added a handpick for good measure, asking for a newer model with the triangle hammer, and hoping that the Gun Gods would smile upon my sorry buttocks.
Afterwards, the website indicated they were "OUT OF STOCK" and has remained like that ever since.
Everybody's favorite brown truck arrived today, and in the box was a nice 1977 with 2 mags, and a cleaning rod in excellent condition. Well, excellent except for the broken left hand grip. No biggy really, I'm sure I can get a good used one until my marschal grips get here. (Whenever that is!)
I'll post photos as soon as the wife gets back with my digital camera.
I had a really hard time getting the slide back on after I cleaned it up. I mean it got stuck more than once halfway on, and I was sweating it that I was gonna have to make a trip to the gunsmith.
Also, I put a Wolfe 19 lb hammer spring on in place of the stock 500 lb spring. It felt very weak.
So, I put a freshly primed case (case only, no charge or bullet) in the chamber and pulled the trigger to see if the firing pin would hit hard enough to fire.
Nope, just a tiny mark on the primer.
Good looking gun, but looks like it will need a little work.

Did you install a new recoil spring? If yes, that is the problem with the slide. You have to grind down the two ends of the new recoil spring so that it looks like the original.

Thanks for your reply Joe,
No it's still the stock recoil spring. I haven't received my Wolfe springs for this one yet.
I know about the end grinding, I did it on my other P-64 when I put a 20 Lb recoil in.
But yes, it's just like that....only harder. (and the small end goes on first)
Also, I am convinced that there must be something not right about my 19 lb hammer spring.
I have a new hammer spring on order too.
I like these little guns. After I put a few hundred rounds through one to prove to myself it's reliable, I plan on making it my carry piece. I like the size and weight.
I find that even my CZ-82 feels bulky and heavy some days and I wind up leaving it in the drawer.
Can't have THAT these days!!

I have a friend who wants to order a p-64. He like mine. Is SOG getting any more in stock, or is there anyone else with some in stock?

None of the usual surplus outlets have any now (SOG, AIM, J&G), but you can be sure they will restock if they can find any.
You can expect to see an increase in price when they get them again.
They are a hot ticket since they got C&R status.
You can probably find some on Gunbroker , or Auction Arms.
Good Luck.

This is why I usually RESIST the urge to play Gunsmith.
Both your P64's were likely "reliable" when you got them , but your modifications made them less so.
I have Two P64s - the first one's DA trigger smoothed up nicely after cleaning - and some firing /dryfiring sessions.
I have not changed the recoil springs because the guns work and I only rack the slides when I load or unload.

If only it were that simple AK. I had trouble replacing the slide with the factory spring (small side first) from the first time I disassembled the weapon to remove the packing grease.
I only replaced the hammer spring to see if it did the same thing in another gun and put original back in.
I am no gunsmith but, I can't see how that has anything to do with the recoil spring (original factory) and the fact that I have had trouble removing / replacing the slide with the original factory spring.
I've been soaking and scrubbing the entire gun for two days now, and It gives me grief without ANY recoil spring on.
I have compared the slides and mechanism to my other fully functional P-64, and I can't find a difference.

Try turning the recoil spring a little. It seems to fall into a flatter position on the frame.

Thanks...I'll try that.

I think my 64 runs better with the wolff springs. It can now fire in double action mode. Was impossible to fire double action with the stock hammer spring.

Well, today I took my first (working) P-64 apart (again) and noticed a small difference between the workings of the 2 pistols. When the trigger guard is pulled out, and the slide is removed, I noticed that the Slide Stop Lever was up on the good pistol, and down against the frame on the problem pistol.
I think this what was stopping the replacement of the slide.
When I pushed the slide stop lever up, it really didn't want to stay up.
I don't know, maybe the trigger return spring is worn.
(I'll have to fire the weapon to see if it effects function).
When I at least got the slide stop lever off the frame, I was able to easily replace the slide, even with the 20 lb Wolfe replacement recoil spring on.
The slide does lock open on an empty magazine, and release as it is supposed to.
(Slide Stop Lever - see part #22 on the parts breakdown list found in "Media" section of this forum)
I found a replacement (left) grip on Gunbroker for $10 to replace my the broken grip I originally received.
My replacement Wolfe hammer springs arrived today. Both the 17 & 19 lb hammer springs appeared to be about the same thickness and length as the original, so I know that whatever they sent me last time was not the right spring. But, even the 17 lb spring was too stiff for me, so I cut a couple of coils off and got a real nice trigger pull (Not recommended, of course) that ignites primers well.
The magazine ejects well too.
Soon as possible, I'll take her to the range for a real test run.
I'll need to put a few hundred HP rounds through her before I can call her reliable.
(Good thing I reload)
I'll keep you posted. These little pistols seem to be worth the effort.
Even if it did bruise my trigger finger last time at the range.
Guess I'll keep a tighter grip on her next time.
I think a 22 lb recoil spring, and a Pachmyr slip on grip will help.
