Just got my first p-64, had two FTEs

Hi folks, first post.

Looks like a great site! I checked it out in advance of my first P-64 purchase- which I got from J&G in excellent condition three weeks ago. Shot about 40 rounds of silver bear FMJs through it so far...but had two FTEs. Not used to this behavior in my comm-bloc weapons. I've had an IJ-70 for 16 years and a CZ82 for a year- never, ever had a jam of any kind with either of those- so I was kind of disappointed.

Any advice for a noob on how to fix my p-64? I wanted this to be my light-weight, thin CCW, but it's got to be reliable.

Make sure that you got all the cosmosline out of it and even clean the mag.
I had one magazine that appeared to have grit in it older than me.

Maybe I'm just assuming, but I'd think he had cleaned it well. He says he has other Comm-Bloc weapons (IJ-70 and CZ-82). However, I could be wrong. In addition to cleaning it, you should figure out a way to test your extractor spring. Check the condition of the extractor and ejector. The ejector should be fine though. Just look at those few components in addition to cleaning.

Is the case not coming out of the chamber, or is it getting stuck in the ejection port causing a jam?

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, I cleaned it. Wasn't packed in cosmo*, but was oiled quite a bit - so I didn't soak it, just sprayed everything down with Remoil and wiped the excess away. I'll try cleaning the mag better- good suggestion.

The ejector pivots quite freely (maybe too freely? needs a stronger spring?) and to juniustaylor's question, The sequence is this (best I can tell): the fired case partially extracts from the chamber, the ejector may slip off at this point, slide continues rearward, then forward, picks up another round and jams it into the bottom of the partially extracted fired case. Didn't notice and striations on the fired case, which would indicate a burr in the chamber. Those silver bear cases are aluminum however, which can be sticky if the tolerances are too tight. I'll try lightly "reaming" the chamber with a wire bore brush and a drill- possibly some build-up in there.

What bothers me is that it's so intermittent. Once every 3-4 mags or so. Not enough to get too excited about (and adequately troubleshoot without burning a lot of ammo) but still bad enough to question reliability in a life-threatening situation.

*I wondered at first if it wasn't somebody's return since it was a later build (1974) and in like-new condition. I was under the assumption those were all gone by now. Maybe they cleaned it, oiled it, shot it and sent it back because it jammed.

silver bear cases are not aluminum , they calcium plate steel, they use to nickel plated
there might be some lacquer built up the chamber though, take some acetone then scrub the chamber out with it ,

I had a really bad time with Silver Bear in a Chinese AK clone. The fired case would stick so tightly in the chamber that I had to punch out the case with a cleaning rod, a hammer, and some aggression.
In one situation the extractor ripped off half the case head, but the rest of the case stayed. There were no burrs.
Have you tried different ammo in it?

I've got some Brown Bear on order. Will try that, cleaning the chamber & mag (although I doubt it's the mag's fault in this case) & report back. Thanks guys!

Finally got around to working on this.

I was swabbing the chamber with a Q-tip soaked in Break-Free and noticed as I removed the Q-tip it snagged on something and peeled off some cotton. Upon closer inspection, I found a small burr at the 7 to 8 o-clock position on the rear edge of the chamber (clockwise just above the feed ramp). Upon further inspection I also noticed that the rear face of the chamber is slightly "mushroomed" in this area, with a distinct wear mark, as is the corresponding "bolt face" (for lack of a better term) inside the slide. I wonder if there is contact at this point when cycling through the rounds? Or maybe at some point dirt/debris got slammed between these two parts and caused the damage?

I removed the burr with some emory cloth, cleaned it up again and shot 1 mag of silver bears. No jams- but I didn't have time to blast through a box of ammo to make sure I fixed the problem.

I'm sure pictures would help, I'll see what I can do...but anyone else seen this issue in a P-64?

sometimes you need to do some cleaning of the inside of the chamber to make things run. a little f&b goes a long way, no matter the brand of the gun.
